  • The Unofficial Agile LP Thread

Ive been blown away by the tone of a back breaking, all mahogany guitar. I think even my love of my shredders may be dwindling. They just dont get this beefy. I may have to try an SLMAH sometime. In the mean time, Ive been pointed in the direction of Agile for LP clones. I currently have 2 Epi LPs, but what Im seeing of the Agiles 3000 and up models has really gotten me curious.

What Im looking for here: 1. Pics. 2. a quick review of tone and quality over all of the guitar.

The Epis are pick up 5 and choose 1. Are the Agiles more consistent than this? I think my next guitar purchase may be an Agile, unless I find an SLMAH to play before I buy or a nice Gibson LP locally. Im really curious about these Agiles.

FYI I think Agile are currently taking custom orders for their (semi?) annual custom run, so if you want to spec one out completely yourself, now is the time. Like an 8 string fretless baritone. bawoooooowww!

Damn, that would be cool, but next round of funds isnt until Feb..

I could see it though, dark blue trans quilt, mahogany body and neck, triple body and headstock binding, neck binding, MOP block inlays, gold hardware, no pick guard etc. etc.....

Here are my three Agiles, an AL-3100, and AL-2000 and an Intrepid 8 string.

            I'll go Low to high

The 2000 really was some serious bang for the buck, but i personally hated the pickups in it. I had bought it to practice changing pickups anyway so this wasn't a big deal. I put in a meatier PAF in it and the thing really is a beast. It sounds great.

The Intrepid 8 string - uh, maybe an hours worth of playing, used mostly as a bass. Come to think of it I should have put this at the low.. It's a good sounding guitar well made. If it had jumbo frets it would be great, as it is I have had serious thoughts about getting rid of it.

AL-3100 - Birds eye maple top, weighs a lot. I liked the pickups that were in there but I had a pair of guitar fetish pickups i wanted to try (which btw sucked the life out of the guitar) I'm going to pick up another set of PAF's and put in. The guitar feels great, had no problems with setup or anything.

The only thing (and I don't know if this had changed as I stopped going anywhere near the Agile forum) is, is that the bridge that comes on these is alright, but just alright. It has this weird metal wire that goes across it. I wanted gold hardware anyway so I changed mine out. You may not run into any issues with the bridge I didn't I just throw that out there because it seemed to be a popular piece to replace for some reason.

The nut I think is by Bonetech(?) I can't remember. All I do know is the 3100's has served me well and I failed it by changing the pickups.

i should mention that you shouldn't expect a$3000 when you order one of these. There's little cosmetic things (binding that doesn't match up where they meet, etc) stupid shit that if you are going to play the guitar you won't really be worrying about. Basically any Gibson snob could find things to be a douche over, but where it counts, the feel, the sound, it's all there.

Also after watching "The Metal show" the other night with Alex on there it got me GASing for a silver burst

Hey man, I don't personally own this but my buddy does, and I'll throw in my 2 cents. I have played it enough.

I won't post a pic since it isn't mine, but I'm half certain it's this, but set neck:

Visuals: It looks amazing... At a semi-far distance. Up close it doesn't look that good, but that's me nitpicking. Binding was good, one place didn't match up perfectly, but who gives a fuck, the colour is nice too I might add, I just don't like the "flame" No blemishes really, and the fretboard is nice and clean. No chunks missing

Feel: It's not my cup of tea. The neck is a little beefier than my Ibanez, but VERY comfortable to play rhythms on. Leads, not so much, due to the set neck and thickness, but still a great guitar to tune to Drop A and do some chugging Just kidding. Another thing I would like to add is that I'm very picky about bridges. The TOM's always seem to bother my hand when made by Gibson, Epiphone, Dean, or ESP, (surprisingly not Jackson ), but on the Agile it does not bother me at all! As well the action was pretty low when he got it, only needed a very minor adjustment.

Tone: Incredible! It's very crunchy with the stock pickups, very resonate unplugged too. It's kind of trebly, which is my cup of tea mixed with alcohol, but that might just be his amp. Very crunchy, very loud too.

Basically if I had to sum it up: It's a guitar you'd introduce to your family. It's visually pleasing, and very tame, but when you plug it in all alone, in the dark with the only light being the JCF homepage on your computer screen, it makes you feel loved, and cared for, and that everything will be alright.

I have checked out a few and seemed like great bang for the buck. Thanks for the reviews.

Ive got a 3100 Silverburst... While yes, I am selling it, that doesent mean its not a great guitar... its just not a great guitar for me personally! Ive never been an LP guy and as much as I try, I just cant get into them... maybe if they had thin shredder necks I could be.

Objectively, these blow away the Made in China Epi LPC Silverburst I had. I bought that guitar brand new as well and it was a piece of junk. The fit and finish on the Agile really is pretty damn nice! The clearcoat seems a little thin for my liking, but I like a nice thick coat. Some would say less paint lets the guitar "breathe" more, to each his own really. The ebony fretboard is tight, dark and uniform. The MOP inlays are ok... theyre not grade A MOP like you would find on a USA jackson, but its MOP none the less and you can tell that. The binding and paint masking for the binding is very well done, I cant say the same for the Epi LPC I had. Real Grover tuners are fine I guess, Im not a fan of Grovers personally but they do the job.

Nut work is nice, fret work was decent, could be better, but far from the worst Ive seen though, thats why I went over mine. No real complaints with the bridge or other hardware, electronics seem ok. Pickups are eh... Im not one for a PAF tone, mine has the Alnico V's and they do seem a bit muddy for my liking, but again Im mainly a metal player.

Ive played some good Gibsons and bad Gibsons. This is right in the middle. Better than every faded series Ive ever played by a long shot, but not quite up to my buddys Standard, for instance. A happy medium at a price point that cant be beat IMO. I think I would do better with a 3100M with the maple adding a little brightness, I like some bite. Oh and a slim neck carve for sure, for me.

Imagine, being able to be magically whisked away to... Delaware. Hi... Im in... Delaware...

I have AL-2000 in Wine Red, looks pretty but it's super heavy so that's a turn-off for me. I'm selling it.

These are the two Ive got my eye on right now:

                        .

Im leaning heavily towards the green model.

That Green one is nice, I like the blue a little bit more because it doesn't have the pick guard on it. One of these days I want to pick up the Purple Bird

I currently have an Agile 8 string Intrepid. Definitely a great bang for your buck. Indeed they'll need a little bit of tweaking when you get one. I've had two others (Agiles) in the past. Might go down the custom route next time they are open for orders.

Yes, I love the purple bird. I also like Rich's purple quilt-top and wish one of you would buy it so I can stop gassing for it. And don't forget the Hamer double cut.
