Any Knowledgeable Fender P bass guys here?

I picked this up awhile back and wanted to get some things lined on it.. I have no use for it but deal was good and after cleaning it up and adjusting the neck it sounds good. but i have my Piezo Jackson bass from 85 so thats all i need.

First after googling 1966 p bass i see models like mine with the J&P pups then i see some p-bass's with just the Soap bar pups.

wondering was this an option you could get back then?. i tried to find a catalog from back then but no luck.

The tuners acutally work backwards where right turn is loosing the strings and i can tell the pots are not original and someone added a toggle to go back and forth on the pups. and i also fixed the wiring where all the tape was. cant stand that.

anyways. heres some pics. check em over and see if you think its a solid 66 or what? Trying to figure out what to do with it. Love to trade it off or sell it but need the 411 first.

I'm not an expert when it comes to dates and serial numbers but before you are going to sell it please do a little test. See how the bass sounds in a band mix (both recording and live) compared to Jackson.

LOL thats something i dont have the gear for. I just have a little bass 1x12 combo and i wouldnt know what to listen for since these are the only 2 bass's ive owned LOL

There's very few basses that work better in a loud rock music context than a decent P-bass and Jackson definitely isn't one of them + the most important electric bass lines were played with P (all the grooves on 60's Motown and Stax recordings).

Plus you got J & P hybrid pickup configuration which gives you a lot of versatility + you got the growl which sterile sounding piezo simply lacks.

P for the Maiden and J for the Rush.

And congrats on the piezo. Those things kill, but the undersaddle transducers have a tendency to crack, which is why they stopped making them.

Im not a bass guy. i got a deal on this and just had to jump on it.

but guys over at Harmony central gave me some insight. looks like the pups are dimarzios from early 70's and the jazz pup was added. also and its pretty obvious the body was stripped and clear coated.

but not bad considering its 45 years old.

Its about to go on the chopping block anyways.

Matt. Yeah that 85 Concert bass is awesome. I guess i should get some piezo saddles just to have as a spare. i dont play it much. i also got a deal on it too. guy just didnt want to ship since it was in a anvil flight case so i grabbed it.

+1 on the info from harmony central. fender didn't do factory P+J configs until the 80's. the stripped body, the added J p/u, and the di'marzios will affect the overall value. if you try to move it as a "solid player" instrument you might be able to get a bit more than you expect. it would be hard to put a concrete value on it because of the mods/refin.

i am with endrik though, that is a killer bass that would deliver a phenominal tone. i'd hang on to it, even if you only use it to record....

I might do that mark. Im thinkin id like to trade it off for a guitar of some sorts. but i honestly cant see myself ever wanting another bass.

but i can see myself needing another badass Jackson or something high end! LOL

Just a thought, if you want just one bass laying around, why not something that's classic and sounds great? An 80's bass with only piezo pickups is the epitome of sterile and balless sound.

Absolutely. I remember when those came out. I had to try it...a white one. I plugged in and played it for about 20 seconds, and that's the end of that story. That's when I bought a Guild Pilot bass..a white one. That's when every store around here were stocked with those Guilds.

I'd keep that P bass..
