so, i decided to try a les paul again. one of the GCs near me always has a TON of used les pauls....epiphone and gibson. i had a large amount of store credit, so the wife and i decided we'd use it for a les paul. we spent 3 hours and played 15 les pauls - gibson, epiphone and a couple of "off" brands. i was really wanting to grab a "real" les paul - a gibson - but for the money, NONE of them "felt" right. a couple sounded "ok" - but there was one - an epiphone - that felt killer and sounded like amplified electricity. when i played the chuck berry "johnny b. goode" lick, the guitar sounded EXACTLY the way i "hear" a les paul sounding. it looked fantastic, too.
my wife held that one off to the side and i tried several more - including one of the epiphone les pauls with the floyd rose. i REALLY wanted to like that one. it didn't look as good, play as good, or sounded anywhere near as good as the one the wifey was holding. there was ONE gibson i liked, but it was almost $2000, used. for the money, the difference wasn't that far off from the "magical" epiphone - which was only $329.00.
HOW can that be?!?!?!?! how can a lowly epiphone even REMOTELY compare to a REAL gibson les paul?!?!?! honestly? beats the hell out of me. that's why i HATE shopping for gibson products - their quality is so out of control it becomes miserable.
here is what happend next....i wanted to buy the gibson. my wife said the epi sounded better. i told her she was full of shit, that she just wanted me to get the cheaper guitar. so what we decided was that we would have a random guitarist in the store play each one and let him decide. my wife and i would determine which sounded "better" and the random guy would decide which played "better". the epi sounded WAY better to my wife and i. even the dude said it sounded really awesome. he thought it played surprisingly well also. the dude thought the gibson played "stiff" and noticed that it was fretting out around the 18th fret when bending the B string.
end of story? i got the epi and still have $1300 GC store credit!!! it is an older korean les paul '59 standard reissue with skatterbrane "earthbrane" custom humbuckers!!!! here are the pics.....
