  • NOSGD: Anyone here like Koa?

    New Old Stock Guitar Day!

One piece flamed Koa body. Koa neck with flame and a little birdseye at the headstock.

Yes, I have a GAS problem.

I've been drooling over this thing for like... a decade. Every time I went to Guitar Showcase, I'd go into the Vintage Room and drool. Back when it had a NOT FOR SALE sign on it, for the longest time. Seeing how I had money set aside for an ESP and Jackson custom order, both of which looks like will never happen, I finally gave in to my urges. It came with everything in the original package, the Custom Shop package with guitar cord, tremolo arm, cleaning cloth hasn't even been opened yet, and I probably won't open it.

This was part of a two piece set. The owner of Guitar Showcase didn't want to break apart the set, but Larry Ellison kept throwing money at him until he gave in. This one was supposed to go to Kirk Hampster, twice... but he flaked on it both times. The last time they had it packed up and were going to drive it up to him, but his guitar tech said he had to take an early flight... and never came back for it. I dunno the validity of the stories, but this is one amazing looking guitar. I didn't even bother to plug it in because whatever it sounds like at the showroom isn't going to represent how it will sound with my amp. It's so dark and brooding. I loved mahogany, but this is like so much more guttural and dark. Not very much in the high frequency, but that's fine with me. The lower midrange is amazing. This guitar has the best voicing of any that I've ever played. It's seriously got some mojo.

It does have a neck issue. There is some moderate string buzz on the neck. But, this is a new guitar and it's a Custom Shop piece, so Fender will pay shipping both ways. All it needs is to be Plek'd and it should be amazing.

It has this deep guttural growl... kinda like mahogany, but but much more organic sounding. It's the most evil sounding guitar I've ever owned, even with the relatively mild vintage humbucker, I did not need to adjust a single setting on my Orange. I just plugged it in and it sounded like god. Most of the fret buzz isn't noticeable when plugged in, so that's good. But after sitting in a museum for the past 13 years in the Guitar Showcase's owners collection, it's finally found a home.

    Without further delay:

            Thanks guys!

It was always a ritual... going to visit the local music stores and checking out consignments, every time I stopped at Showcase, I'd always go in the Vintage Room and just stare at it for a few minutes before leaving.

So, instead of waiting years for a custom Jackson, I decided to get it. It wasn't really all that expensive. It was still priced at 1999 prices. Fender won't even make one now, and even if they would, I doubt they'd be able to get wood this figured...

Now, I need help. I need to stop buying. I've totally overdone it. lol

HOLY SHIT, awesome. I love KOA, think it sounds perfect and of course looks great too. I find Koa sounds like mahogany but a bit brighter and more defined. almost like Mah w/ a maple top.

I keep coming back to look at it.

I don't know a lot about Fenders, but I've never seen one that wasn't a bolt on. Love that. I haven't played koa, but I love mahogany. Add in the humbucker, and I think you just bought my favorite Fender ever.

Sweet! I think I actually had that calendar that year...I remember that photo of both guitars.

Thanks! It's off at the authorized Fender CS service luthier. He's gonna list everything that needs to be done and confer with Fender what to do, but it's covered under warranty.

It's been sitting for 13 years, so I'm really not surprised that it needs a detailed tune up. It's probably what kept it from selling at least a few times. Lucky me. Can't wait to get it back.

Oh, I'm also having them change all the gold hardware to black. I'd do it myself, but all the different screw sizes... that's easier for them to figure out.
