  • Pickup suggestions for Gibson SG?

I have a Gibson SG Platinum (thin mahogany body with mahogany neck and blank ebony fret board.) The stock 490s that are in it are OK, but I really want something good in this guitar.
I play mostly Metallica type stuff, with a little 80's hair metal thrown in, but I like to have a good clean on the neck pickup too.

Any suggestions on what some good choices would be? I'm very sick of the JB/Jazz combo and EMG 81/85 sets. Had too many guitars with those combos, so want to go another route.

Full Shred? It was made for short scale mahogany guitars.

Duncan Custom bridge. Dimarzio PAF Pro neck. Unless you like the neck for cleans, then go Pearly Gates. The PAF Pro will do cleans but not as nice as the PG. It's better if you like to use the neck for leads though.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I went the total polar opposite this time though.
Decided to get the EMG Het Set for this one. So far am really digging them.

Whoah, I could imagine Glenn Tipton weilding that one. I know his was black, but that's pretty cool.

I personally don't care for EMGs..they have their good points. Regardless..that looks great!!!

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of EMGs either. Have had a lot of 81/85 sets and they just sound...I dunno...sterile seems to be the best word.
These however sound a lot better. The neck pickup is much fatter and warmer...actually very nice clean tone, which was always impossible on my other EMG-equipped guitars.
The bridge pickup has a lot of bite like you expect from EMG, but more note clarity. I'm pleasantly surprised.

Killer looking SG because it has no Iommi or Young vibe.

I ordered up one of these and had a 3 month wait but it was well worth it:
Gibson Limited Run 50th Anniv. SG Diablo- has the 498 B but works great for the more "classic" metal and hard rock we do. Am seriously considering replacing the chrome with black hardware. Maybe leave the p'up covers but everything else, black.

I dig that Jim. I agree, black on black would look wicked on this. What size Floyd block is in that baby?

                      Mike,
                      Pretty sure it's a 32 mm.
I wanna drop a black Floyd w/ an FU brass big block in there, along with the black locking nut, tuners, and maybe some noiseless springs and see if that sharpens the trem responsiveness & sustain a little.
The OFR that's in there is def. a German-made one but apparently not one of their better ones. The "play" on that trem is a tad wonky & the micro tuners are fucked up: the E string tuner only turns about 120 degrees. Makes me mad as hell that an 1800 dollar limited-blah-blah-blah passes QC with a fucked OFR.

Barekuckle nailbomb in the neck, warpig in the bridge. Should be pretty nice sounding.
I want a guitar made of ALL abalone. That would be badass. All shellfish should die for my shreddage delight.
