Since it's the past few days have been too cold to shoot the remaining clear coats that I need to get done on a couple of other guitars, I did some construction work on this last night.
In July of 2009, I started drawing over a picture of a friend’s 59 reissue LP and came up with something along the same lines, but with some of my own influences. I kept drawing it over and over, making templates (and you can see the early version in the opening credits in my videos) and stepping away from it for a while so it could mature in my head. I came back to it in the spring of 2012 and decided that I pretty much had it where I wanted it and decided to start cutting. I may have posted some pix of it from time to time, but whatev, here’s my official intro.
So yeah; here’s the first prototype of the Sully ’71. The body is Black Limba, the neck is 3pc White Limba and there’s a rosewood board on it (as you can see) with my mini backslash inlays. 25.5 scale, big SS frets, and I think that this one will have a recessed TOM with the strings going through the body (although I’ll definitely do one of the three with a Floyd). There will eventually be a carved top version, but this one will have some general contouring on the face of the body, and the back will be super contoured out as I tend to do; sculpted neck joint, gut cut, lap contour (or “crotch notch” as I call it), etc. I’ve got plans for three prototypes, and hopefully I should have sorted out how I want it to look by the third one.
It’s still in its early construction stages as you can see, but since I did some work on making the neck last night and pulled the clamps this morning, I figured I’d share. I know it’s not for everyone, and that’s ok; I’m just trying to carve out my spot for those that may like what I do and not worry too much about the purists, so to speak. I think that it’s familiar enough for fans of the traditional mixed with some aspects that speak to my pointy guitar loving roots.
