  • So, is this a shite idea - Telecaster

OK, I really liked the looks and sound of a telecaster. I narrowed a few down on ebay, a mexican standard, an 80's jap reissue and a 2006 american standard. So, being sensible I went to my local guitar shop and played quite a few of each (bar the Jap one) and hated every one of them. The necks just felt wrong.

Would it be so bad for me to buy a modern Charvel san dimas neck and stick it on a telecaster body? I've done the same with a model 3DR and its a great guitar....

Maybe I just answered my own question but you guys might think of something that I've missed

I've been plotting something similar for my Charvel TE Custom telecaster. I'd use a Promod neck with the locking nut and a tuneomatic bridge on top of this baseplate http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-BIGSBY-P...item5ae378e153. I'd then mount a Schaller tailpiece with fine tuners to complete the effect. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Schaller........Hopefully this would yield Floyd Rose tuning stability, the feel my favorite neck, and approximately the sounds of a Tele.

Or maybe I'd just use a Promod neck with a replacement nut similar to this and locking tuners. http://www.allparts.uk.com/online-sh...ch-p-4307.html

I'd try to find a nice Model 7 if a fixed bridge is a requirement.

I don't think the contoured neck heel will fit in the square neck pocket. I might be wrong.

fender telecasters have a different heel shape than a fender strat. the tele is more square.

I see 2 options for you:
                1. Just try and find an old Model 7, (a few around me for good prices imo)
                2. Get one of those Charvel Style 2's and put a pickguard on it.

Britain, little Britain, home of the telecaster obsessives. I don't know what it is with us Brits but Tele's and proper, traditional Fender Strats seem to be a national obsession, can you not man up and get a KV1? Seriously though I am with you on this. My style 2 is not only more comfortable than my strats, but it also sounds better. This greives me a lot as I am a hairmetal traditionalist. There was a pink sparkle Model 7 on Ebay.co.uk recently, but for the £500 asking price I don't think anyone had it.

On the plus side there are plenty of hybrid Tele bodies about and for cheap, some with some nice capped tops as well if that is your thing. But you'll have to go custom or hybrid, unless you rerout the square neck pocket. If you do rerout, I don't know if you'll have enough room for intonation with a standard bridge, my guess is you might not as you'll effectively be extending it by at least 5 or 8mm so you'll need to move the bridge back by 5mm at least. Whether or not you can get away with the existing through body holes, depends on what string angle to the saddles you are left with I guess.

What is it about the tele setup that you particularly like? The tele bridge or the metal control panel and stratchplate or just the body shape and the twang?

Any company can make you a custom body, Musikraft KNE Guitars etc. I'd suggest a body from KNE and a Musikraft or Charvel neck.

If it were me I'd definitely go Style 2 or Mick Mars Kramer with it, paint it pink with spiderwebs and get a 1H or 2H body made with a floyd, but that probably wouldn't deliver the sound that you are looking for. Unless you get a Charvel Style 2, choose and tap the humbuckers wisely to make it sound like a Tele? That is if you are comfortable with a floyd.

ginsambo, do you have ADD/ADHD by any chance?

More on topic, i've had the same thing in mind as the OP, however i want it with a Floyd and H/S configuration and a pointy headstock... Anyhow, why not just buy a Mexican Tele and shave the neck?
It's all about the blues-rock chatter.

you can put a strat neck on a tele but not a tele neck on a strat without wood work. strat has rounded heal so there will be gaps on both sides where it curves. the tele neck is squared so it wont fit into a round heal unless its modified. older G&L necks all had the tele heals. IIRC charvel tele headstocks had strat heals but goodluck finding one of those. PRO MOD tele and add a pickguard? it will never be a string thru but you could probably put a hardtail on it if it sat on a shim.

wow thanks for all the replies guys and I like that replacement floyd non locking nut. Well, the neck fell through. It went for too much money, So have decided to build my own telecaster. Will get a warmouth neck (with reverse headstock) and a single piece swamp ash contoured body from guitarbuild.

I cant really explain the appeal of a tele, I guess it'd be along the lines of the telle is like your wife guitar and the Charvel is my filthy mistress. If you know what I mean - you make sweet love to your wife. Your mistress - you kick her back doors in

Yeah I saw that USA neck, unfortunately that is what they are going for these days, I had my eye on the taxi cab yellow body, £120 is reasonable I guess but I don't have the funds right now and for that I'd rather get a custom body made.

My advice, don't get a warmoth unless you want to spend loads of money, get a Musikraft Charvel spec neck. They are cheaper than you think and the spec selection is all up there now. Or if you don't mind flatsawn, KNE necks look pretty good but you'll need to route the headstock to a template. Whatever for an extra $20 or so I'm sure they'll do you a tele heel. Or get a body custom made like a T Vint to your spec. Cheaper than you think and they will do non standard bridge options etc. than listed if you ask.

I haven't had great dealings with Warmoth, even with mid range stuff to be honest. KNE on the other hand are a superb company though and quartersawn or premium birdseye Musikraft necks are always nice and great value.

What about this? Has a standard pocket.

A Promod or Model neck should work just fine in a Tele body. The Tele neck pocket is squared off but if the neck is snug in the pocket then your good to go.
The older MIJ bodies should have a neck pocket close to 2 1/4. USA 2 3/16.
A proper bone, or Graph Tech nut with the Tele bridge should keep good tune.
                              Models
The prudes may snub them, but I don't care.
                              I dont need furniture.
If its tough, shreds, and screams, Its all good.
If it gets jacked, I'll get another one.
                              And rock that sucker.
