Hey, I'm not a purist snob. The way I see it, if you can use a machine to do the job of a human, but more accurately, consistently, and faster, then do it. If I had the cash for a CNC machine, you can bet I'd be using one.

No CNC in this garage, but I have a small milling machine.
      Comes in handy!
I've seen where guys retrofit these little Enco mills with servos and hook up to a PC.
      Tempting!

I might try building one of those copying machines one day, although the problem with that is you actually have to have a 3 dimensional template to copy. You could end up with a lot of templates taking up room in the shop. I've seen them used to carve necks and bodies though, which would save a ton of time.

The Dragon rasps from Stewmac are $50 each, but I'm sure they do a far better job than my shitty Chinese $5 hardware store rasp. That drum sander from Grizzly is exactly what I'm looking for, but I'm pretty sure I could build the exact same thing for $20. I've never tried a microplane. Do they have them at Stewmac?

Stewmac doesn't carry them, but woodcraft does. Your pall Freddy G turned me on to these things; they're fast! I use the 8" round and flat ones for roughing in contours and rough neck shaping.

I'm a huge fan of templates in general; makes like easier.

The prices on those are pretty good, and I can order direct too. I'm going to order both the ones you mentioned. I might get one of the rotary shapers as well.

Oh me too. Flat templates anyway. You spend some time getting a template perfect, and it just means far less work in the long run.

I just meant that for those duplicating machines, it would be kin of a pain in the ass. Imagine having full sized 3 dimensional dummies of every guitar shape you've ever made though.

Well, for a duplicarver, you just have a template of your carved top and your neck blanks, so it's not like you'd need full sized 3d copies of stuff. The duplicarver would take up more space, I'd wager!

As far as the rotary microplane goes, you can get a bearing attachment for the bottom, so it'd work like a robo sander. Have been interested, but a spinny cheese grater is probably more danger than I wanna get at the moment!

I get what you're saying. It is a little scary looking. Speaking of scary things, have you ever heard of the Lancelot? It's a carving attachment for an angle grinder that is basically a chainsaw chain on a grinder disk. A local guy uses it for doing carved tops on hollow bodies.

                    Here's a pic:

This thread has scarier weapons than all the gun posts in the general forum hehe.

I actually have a microplane tool in my house and I didn't know it until I used it tonight. I have one of their graters for my Parmesan cheese. Let me tell you they are the bees knees for grating Parmesan. A quick rinse with cold water and a wipe down with a paper towel and you could go all night.

I realize it's been a while since I posted any more pictures of my progress. The problem is, I got my mother of pearl, but I just don't know what I'm going to do for a 12th fret inlay. It's the only thing holding me up, but I just can't come up with anything. If I can't come up with anything better by tomorrow, I'm just going to do a Viking rune inlay. Once the inlay is done, I can radius the board, glue it to the neck, and finish sanding the neck. It's already carved almost to it's final shape, but I figured I would finish it after the fret board is on. So, maybe I'll post some more pics tomorrow.
