  • Played a PRS Custom 24 for the first time today...

Been a avid Charvel, Jackson, Gibson, Fender player and tried the PRS pattern thin Custom 24 in purple hazel today. Ok, I seriously liked this guitar - had a lot of tonal range and really liked the access to the upper frets and feel of the neck. Reminded me of my SG, Les Paul Standard and Strat - with a hint of Charvel neck play-ability all rolled into one.

Just wanted to consult the forum for feedback on whether or not it's worth laying out that kind of coin. I'm seriously tempted to sell off some gear and add it to the herd. I'm currently a solo guitar in a band that plays a wide range of styles.

Also up for consideration if I can get a hold of one to try, would be the new Custom 24 SE 7 string - a lot cheaper of course.

Thanks in advance for either fueling the desire or throwing some water on it.

Yep, I really like my PRS custom 24. Like you say, lots of tonal range, nice playability and great looks. That said, I don't play it as much as my Soloist - for me the soloist feels nicer to play. But if you play a wide range of styles, sounds like it could be a very good fit for you. For reference, I picked mine up used for 1800 off a dealer. I expect careful perusal of craigslist would knock a couple of hundred off that if you're patient.

If you're buying it new just make 10000% sure that you go over it with a fine tooth comb for any issues. I bought a CE24 Maple Top back in 2000 and after sending it back to pre 3 times and them denying anything wrong, I was told by the local rep to live with it or sell it. I finally got rid of it at an $700 loss.

Thanks all for their input. I may have to go back and give it a more thorough testing. I'm gonna see how flexible they are with the price as well.

I pretty much only play PRS guitars and a Tele these days. PRS stuff is extremely well made.

Only you can tell if a PRS is right for you. Personally, I think they make nice stuff but I could just never see myself spending that much on one as I would always opt for a Jackson/Charvel or nice Les Paul for that kind of money. If I ever did get a PRS it definetly wouldn't have that rotary switch knob as a pickup selector. I can't stand that thing!

I have been buildin myself a sick tele. Sorry for the derail.

Al dimeola style fades, fishman vst, duncans, and a canary wood neck. Should have verything to begin assembly in a couple weeks.

Regarding the rotary switches, it must have been a long time since you guys have checked out a new PRS - I can't remember the last time I saw a new PRS with a rotary switch. They've been doing normal toggles for a long time.

And as annoying as they are, they're still better than the 3 separate mini-toggle switches that Jackson/Charvel used on a lot of guitars - that's a terrible idea too.

personally, i like the rotary switch. it was weird at first, but i got used it live pretty quick. i was actually a little more accurate with my switching using the rotary vs. a 5-way blade. sometimes with the blade i get a little too excited. the newer ones with the toggle or the blade switch are nice too, and certainly easier for a traditionalist.

I have had a few high end PRS's and they are nice guitars.
Can't say they are the best out there but they play great.
I can't see paying the price for a new one so used is a good way to go.
The import SE's are a good alternative IMO very high quality at an affordable price.
                          Really? well screw Mark Twain.

Don't care for their Fender-type bridges and one-piece wrap-around bridges they use.

And that neck joint. I still don't trust the long-term integrity of it. It just doesn't look like enough surface area for a long-term hold, especially when considering the routing out above it for the bridge pup. I know people who've owned one have said it's a non-issue but it just doesn't feel right to me......

If they'd change just those two things I'd be all over one. I know they make an SE torero model with neck-through and a Floyd but it had to have actives in it. Still considering it anyway. I am a sucker for jewel blue.
