Yep. That is called a used guitar in my book. If I'm shelling out that type of cash, I want it new in a box or marked down as a display model. I don't have a problem with display models, but mark them as such. When I did go to GC (I won't even walk in the door anymore....ever...different story) I hated playing the guitars with the old dusty strings that were sticky...even the ones there were hidden up high on the racks.

@Amerturk I agree 100%! I am stuck being a lefty though so the only store around here that even has anything I can play is Guitar center. Most of the other stores only maybe have one or two left handed models in the shop and they're usually mid priced or lower range models. I hate Guitar center myself but unfortunately here In Pgh. Pa. it's the only place that carries any lefties that I might even be interested in. I don't blame the other small stores for not carrying more lefties because I know how long they sit around. I figure for every 100 people who walk in to buy a guitar maybe 5 or 10 at the most are lefties. So most stores aren't even financially able to stock anything left handed of high quality because it's just not a good investment business wise and they just don't have the money to let a three thousand dollar guitar sit on the shelf for a year before they see a return on their investment.
This is what I think of Gibson since 1993. I HATE BEING LEFT HANDED! I rock out to Baby metal because Wilkinsi said I can't listen to Rick Astley anymore.

Theres one thing that seems to be getting missed with this convo. The woods used; Mahogany vs Maple. Mahogany is softer and more porous than maple. Maple is stronger and denser. tho maple is stronger it isn't impervious to breaking just less prone. String tension, distance of fall, surface its falling on, and strength of wood is all relative to how it breaks. I know this is probably all a bit obvious but nobody has mentioned it. As Gary said we hear more about the broken Gibson's than other brands due market saturation. There are simply more Gibsons out there being used and accidents happen. Fenders dont break nearly as much due to the headstock being straight. So yes angle has a lot to due with it. But angle is not the only factor.

When I was a kid in school, even the studio's that hung on the wall in our local music shop weren't allowed to be touched unless you had a previous big budget buying history or rich parents or were friends with the staff. In fact I don't even think that they wanted to sell them. These days many precious little darlings scream rape, common assault or racism and call the police or worse, start a hate campaign on facebook if you so much as refuse them a go because they are wearing barbed wire clothes, so they get their way. No respect at all, all about instant graification, I want it now attitudes. Mind you we lived in a small town with one tiny music shop. Kids like that, whose parents work all hours, bending over backwards for them and never disciplining them need a good beating to give them some perspective on what assault, pain and life is really all about and should be refused.

Probably for good reason too, I've seen a Standard that suffered a neck break whilst still in the stand, supported from the base. The whole headstock just went crack and landed on the floor, just because someone looked at it I think.

Anyway it is in keeping with tradition, Fender = big neck pocket cracks, Gibson = headstock breaks. It is the way it has always been and should never change, less they break tradition.

Ok, I'll play. Yes, $4k is way too much for a guitar that isn't perfect. Hell, it's way too much for one that is!!!

Sorry, but I'm not buying the stories of Gibsons sufferering headstock breaks just from being hung on guitar stands. Those guitars had to have suffered a hit/fall at some point and someone in the store is simply not owning up to it. The one thing that does happen to Gibsons hanging on guitar stands is that their nitro finish reacts with the rubber its up against and you may see paint "burn" marks or discoloration. This is especially true of white Customs. And if you think Gibson prices are high have you checked PRS lately? I agree with those who said you hear about the Gibson issues more because they simply sell more volume. A dealer I have bought Les Pauls from tells me he sells 3-4 Gibsons to every 1 PRS. BTW, most Guitar Centers I've been in have the higher end Les Pauls hanging up high on the walls along with PRS and the more expensive Fenders. They will however bring them down for you to play/try out if you ask. They aren't getting pawed by hoards of teenagers as many would have you believe.

That's not balanced well? A body being heavier than a neck is a good thing. If a guitar is neck heavy and all the neck wants to do is dive, that's not a good thing.

Unrealistic expectations. I've never seen a perfect guitar and I've played (and owned) some expensive ones. Also, we're talking about something made of wood. Even if a guitar leaves a factory near perfect, a climate change may necessitate a setup or cause a fret to rise or something.

Keeping in mind this is a Jackson board, note that many USA Jackson's MSRP in the $4K range and above. Are they all overpriced too? If somebody smashes one of them into a wall and breaks the neck, does that make them even more overpriced?

                          • I have had cheap guitars and expensive guitars.

First of if a thing is to expensive that is just the way it is. Don't put it the as the main reason for not going for it. If you think you can't do it you can't it is a simple fact of life.

I wanted RR2772 so bad that I just said fuck it, put the guitar on order and then found a job after being 13 months unemployed with no goals whats so ever to go for. That was back in 1996 and RR2772 is still worth the 5000$ or so it costed me back then.

I also had a even more expensive Gibson Les Paul custom '57 historic. For some reason a sharp point on the bridge made the strings break and I also had a volume pot to be changed. The guarantee took care of that and then it was cured. Just part of the life. Nothing is perfect even high priced items.

                            • Now we can argue transportation/showroom flaws
give me a reason why you should recieve an expensive guitar with finish flaws, bad hardware, etc?

I don't know about you, but I'm not buying something new to bring it back for repair the moment I've got it
Sure, if it's a cheap PoS I'll accept some flaws, but the higher the price, the more anal I'll become

Wouldn't you expect the big price to reflect not only workmanship and materials but also QC?

FWIW: I don't look at guitars the same as I do towards hookers
Yes I expect to get screwed for getting a $150 guitar or hooker, but unlike getting a high paid prostitute, I have no intention to get screwed for a $4K guitar

                              • The more expensive a guitar is, the more my expectations rise as well. But I don't expect perfection because it doesn't exist. Also, I know that there can be an occasional dud with ANYTHING a person is buying (not just guitars), no matter the price point. The more guitars a company sells, statistically the more duds and problems there are gonna be. Gibson sells a lot of guitars.

Also, just because a headstock on a guitar can break when somebody drops it, it falls off their bed, falls off their guitar stand, they swing it around in the air like an idiot....this isn't the guitar's fault, nor is it a reflection of quality. It is widely known that tilt-back headstocks are more susceptible to breakage (no matter the brand), so a person should be extra cautious with one of those guitars.
