Works pretty well as I'm a complete hack and even I find 2 1/2 octaves to be very usable. Beyond that the problem is less with the ability to play up there and more with the fact that the fretted string is so short that it just won't sustain. At the 36th fret it just kind of squeaks momentarily. After acquiring the Washburn I began to wonder if Hamer wasn't onto something with the 26 3/4" scale on the Virtuoso, that extra inch and a quarter would make quite a bit of difference in the relative length of the vibrating string on those highest frets. In any case, great stuff ... carry on.
Thats a good bit of info man thanks you raise some interesting points. This is really a prototype to start with, I have other ideas and plans if i think it needs improvement. And the shorter scale is one of them. i love my shorter scale charvel fusion its my main player so....... enough said.

Any other advice or info you have let me know.

Small update, I scaled up my plans and roughed them out on paper around the actual neck. Early signs indicate i may just pull this thing off. Its looking just how i wanted. I know i should have done the plans in cad but i prefer a more rustic approach.

If anyone has some advice? SHare share share.

It's funny that you say that in a demeaning fashion... Isn't that what made Charvel/Jackson the brand it is? Musical masturbation and overall guitar wankery?

Seems to me this thread fits perfectly the definition of "custom". Rock on bud, I look forward to seeing the end results.

Yeah, its very cool. I would have no use for most of those frets, but I love seeing stuff like this!

It's pretty cool I guess but to me it would be like making a piano with 124 keys. But you don't need our approval. As long as you like it. Can you play like that gut in the video? I can't.

Very cool project! I'm a big fan of Helge Engelke (Fair Warning, as well as Dreamtide) and he does some really great melodic stuff with his extended-range guitars. The upper frets aren't just for "cats and dogs": in fact, they take on a very different tone, sounding almost like a piccolo at times. Check out some clips of Helge and Fair Warning on youtube and hear for yourself.

Enjoy that project, before and after the build. It's definitely an unusual guitar and I think it's great to see something out-of-the-ordinary.

Hey, it's not often you can trip up yer pick on the fretboard on a regular basis! It will definitely cause you to discipline your picking to more exact strikes.
                              Good job thus far man!

Helge Engelke is awesome!!! Much prefer his work in Dreamtide. Definitely a melodic player that also shreds.
