I'm of the school of thought that the super-high-output pickups that people tend to gravitate toward aren't necessary, nor are really high-gain amps. The tunings alone are enough to make things sound MEAN. So far, my favorite 7-string pickup has been the Dimarzio PAF 7. Weird, huh?
The extended scale on the RGD really has awesome tuning stability, BTW. I have it tuned to A-flat, and it holds tune like nobody's business. Surprising! I'm trying D'Addarios now, the 10-59's. I had been using some custom RD's, but that's a pain to do, and I wanted something in the 10-46 range, but with a 7th string closer to 60 than the 56's Ernie Ball was offering. I like them so far.
