  • A couple more Yamahas! NGD x2...

    Love these things...

First up is a Pacifica 721. Came with a jacked up selection of pickups...really jacked. The nut had been replaced and shimmed with some softer cardboard too, so that got fixed as well. I found out I can't wire a 5-way switch to save my life, and hey - who uses the middle single anyway?? Now it's a 3-way, and the middle single is a dummy. I stole the PAF's out of my Pacifica 1221M which will be away for paint and upgrades in about a week. I also took the tone knob out of the picture, and moved the volume knob to that spot to get it out of the way. Sounds and plays LIKE BUTTAH!! It's a bit of a road dog, but it plays awesome, so who cares, right?

Next up, a Yamaha RGX 621D. The neck is a little thicker/rounder than the Pacificas. Very much Wizard 2-ish. Stock pickups are staying in. I don't know what they are, but they do the job. Trem is solid. Neck feels great, and I love how big Yamaha's frets are. Scalloped upper register. Cool finish. It has some scars, but again, I kinda dig it. Gotta have a few guitars with "the mojo"...

Too many guitars right now, but hey...WHO CARES?!? Pacifica 1221M and my lonely acoustic not shown...

Nice! I always liked those old Yamahas. Do they have the adjustable nut? I had an RGZ 321P (H/S/H) that I regret getting rid of.

Yep! Pure GENIUS! Whoever designed that should get a medal!

Yeah, I really loved that about my RGZ. I even put in an OFR because I kept stripping the bar in the Yamaha trem, and the pickups had a thick sound like a wah stuck in the middle. I still kick myself for not holding onto that guitar.

If I kicked myself for selling guitars I shouldn't have, I'd have two problems:

          1) More guitars than the GC franchise to spare myself the pain!! Or...
          2) I'd have run out of ass to kick 20 years ago...

The nut is two piece - a lower plate, and the upper that your lock nuts screw into. There are four screws in the top - 2 are the ones that fasten it to the guitar, and two to adjust the upper plate up or down - almost like a Fender Micro-tilt neck in a way. So if you are getting buzzing, or change string gauges, or things are too high/low at the nut, you can adjust the level up or down. It's really cool. Kinda like adding or taking away shims.

Joe - you're right about the "cocked wah" sound - very distinct in the RGX.

Their pickups really kicked ass! I'd love to pick me up another old Yamaha some day.

both are cool, but I particularly like the RGX. Only ever see low end ones around here.

Thanks! Interesting idea. Weird that no one followed it over the years.

Yep! The bottom plate is static, but the top can be adjusted up or down.
