  • Opinions on this trade?

I have an 88 Ibanez 540S. I acquired it on a trade several years ago. It’s in very good condition. All original. It’s a very nice guitar and I love it, but don’t play it for several reasons (which are not really relevant to this conversation). Suffice to say, I would have to start changing shit out on it if I wanted to make it a main player, and gig with it and I don’t want to do that. So its been a closet queen. I have an offer to trade it for a 98 RG570. Which is also in great condition. Better than mine actually…..This guitar I could literally play immediately , maybe a pickup change. Something else that’s notable. My main player…is an 89 RG570.

    Thanks guys.....

    P.S. - I’m also waiting to hear about a trade for a Jackson…But I know nothing about it yet……

Is Japan the country of manufacture on both guitars? I have a ton of Ibanez guitars. I love my 87 RG 550 and my 89 RG 570. EDIT; They're both Japanese IIRC so that would be up to you on which model you prefer the feel of.

This is what I think of Gibson since 1993. I HATE BEING LEFT HANDED! I rock out to Baby metal because Wilkinsi said I can't listen to Rick Astley anymore.

Correct - Both MIJ....I kinda feel like that 540 could potentially be worth something more at some point....but the 570 gives me another guitar to actually play NOW...I feel like its a fairly even trade....the thought of having another 570 is cool....I'm just interested on what others think....

540S' tend to be more collectable - especially the early ones with the 3 mini switches and back-stop system in the trem cavity. but, having said that, if the 570 gives you a bigger boner - then go for it, especially if you don't really use the 540S.
        GEAR:

I agree. The 540 is more collectable. I DO have the 3 mini switches (which I love to look at, but HATE to use) with the honeycomb nobs. I don't have the back stop system.
I think the value is fairly even right this second. I'm not sure that will be true in 10 years?......I just don't know if its worth hanging on to the 540 to sit in the closet, when I could
have another cool shredder to actually play.....I feel like I could regret this sometime.....but....MEH.

I'd go for it because I like the RG body shape better than the Sabre but that's just me.

+1 - no sense in hanging on to something you aren't going to use....

                edit - due to pics....

does your 540 have the push pot for coil tapping? if it does, i would sell that sucker rather than trade it for a 570. there are a TON of 570's out there. the 540 with the 3 switches/push-pull is getting harder to find on a regular basis. they do pop up, but most often in black, then yellow (which is what i have), then red, then white....

The pots do not pull up (if memory serves)...I'll double check....What do you think its worth? I thought 5ish? maybe 550?

I've seen a couple (with the push-pull and backstop) go around $800. without the backstop around $650. otherwise, I'd say $500+ depending on overall condition. the original 540 with small dots, dimarzio/ibz pickups are highly regarded.

I'll have to consider the condition of the 570 I guess....I'm in no rush to give it away.....

I passed. The 540 is back under my bed where it belongs. For some reason I believe this guitar will be very collectable.....I think I made the right call...
