  • GJ2 Spirit of 79'

I was able to play a GJ2 spirit of 79' today.
Pretty much, its a heavily reliced Van Halen type guitar.
Ash body, old school charvel neck, rosewood fingerboard with big frets, a single humbucker and a floyd rose.
If it had a neck PU, I'd have got it on the spot, it was that good.
GJ2 is very much on my radar at this point.

I've heard very good things about them..
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

Yes me too! I wonder if that one has a route for the neck pickup under there

          I lol'd.

Love it. Would prefer maple but the single hum and chrome looks great. The headstock is not even bad, and usually "strat but not a Fender!" headstocks leave me cold.

Very much wanting a GJ of some sort. A local shop here is the only GJ dealer in Kentucky http://rhythmandtone.com. He has a blonde Hell hound tele and a blue strat. Both are very nice. He also has a one hum neck thru prototype as well. Give Jamie a call maybe he can hook you up.

I watched a shop tour vid and they have a swimming pool route.

IMHO, the headstock wouldn't be so bad if they ditched the swirly line thingee. Cool guitars, though.

I've heard the necks aren't quartersawn, though. Does anyone know if this is true? If so, makes me wary about stability.

The model series Charvels weren't quatersawn and how many of those have you seen warp or twist?
                    I wouldn't worry about it.

See, that's the trick. 30 years later, the only ones around are those that didn't go bad. So is it that they really are "stable enough", or we don't see/hear about the bad ones over time?

In any event, that risk/reward equation may not add up at a higher price point like the GJ2s.

Or maybe they're doing something else like graphite reinforcement to compensate?

I like them, but the no inlay on the 21st fret seems to throw it off!
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.

FWIW, I've never heard about neck issues on the old Model series. Ever.
