  • I think you guys like guitar building threads, so here's a new one.

Here's a new one I've been working on. In this pic, I've glued the body wings on, planed the back flat, rough cut the shape on the bandsaw (about 2mm from the line) and then finished it off with the template and router. The fretboard isn't attached at this point.

Did some work on the bevels.

Getting ready to glue the fretboard. You can see the little guide blocks that I glue in place to keep the fretboard in position.

You might be wondering why this neck already has a logo on it at this point. Well, it was sort of a test neck that's been sitting around for a while. It is the first one I've done with this headstock shape, and I put the logo when my decals came in to see what it would look like. It has a few coats of clear over it.

    Fretboard glued up.

Started carving the neck this morning.

I made profile templates for the 1st, 5th and 11th fret, and I start by carving those areas with the Microplane, and Dragon rasp.

Then I remove the material in between. The spoke shave makes carving so much quicker.

Here's the profile templates I mentioned. They don't actually fit this neck perfectly because it's about 1/16" wider than the neck I made the templates from. I'm going to have to adjust the templates slightly to account for this.

Gratuitous group shot of the 4 guitars I've been building over the last year.

      From left:
Valkyrie #2 - Maple/walnut neck, walnut/padauk stringers, ash body wings. I need to finish the bevels on this one, route the control cavity, frets, etc..

Valkyrie #1 - Bolt on neck, mahogany/maple body. This one is finished with the exception of the holes for pots and switches. Then ready for paint. I started this guitar many, many years ago.

Urchin - Maple/walnut neck, walnut/padauk stringers, sycamore body wings. Finished. Waiting for paint.

Freyja #1 - Maple/walnut neck, walnut stringers, sycamore body. Needs sanding, routing, frets, then ready for finish.

        Looks impressive Paul!!

Nice! Reminds me of a cross between a B.C. Rich Eagle and a Wave.

Love the look of a natural finish 5 piece neck-thru.
              Nice work!
Any way you could possibly put more shit into your sig?

                Very cool!
I like the way they sort of fit together when they are next to each other.

Really nice. What type of bridge on this one?

Not really decided yet. I might do a TOM/string thu. I haven't done one with a Floyd yet, but Valkyrie #2 might get a Floyd.

                      B.C.Zeegs! I see a Mockingbird, a Bich, and 1/4 of a Warlock.

What the hell are you talking about?

LOL! pretty accurate. My Valkyrie design definitely has elements of all 3.

Those are great looking shapes. Impressive work.
My initial thought on the Freyja was BCR Eagle as well...love those models.
