  • Incoming: Ibby Jem 77BFP

In mentally wrestling over which maple necked/boarded shredder I was going to acquire to satiate my GAS, I narrowed it down to the Charvel MIM Pro Mod San Dimas 1 HH in slime green and the Ibanez Jem 77 BFP.
Had a chance to play both at the nearby Sam Ash and the Jem emerged victorious. The Jem excelled in some key areas- 24 frets vs. 22, better upper fret access, superior Floyd system, broader tonal capabilities, better fret dressing/fret board rolling, the Dimarzio Gravity p'ups were sweet and it comes with a HSC. The only advantage the Charvel had was it's toggle switch (I prefer 'em but with 3 p'ups, you almost HAVE to have a blade switch) and the slime green hue.
    No contest.

Oh, and I snagged a like-new one for less than a G on Reverb. Game over.

Should arrive on Friday after Thanksgiving. That's how you do Black Friday

I had a few jem's. I had a vsbl I got from musicians friend that they were closing out for 750 at the time. I got it to flip it because that was stupid low. Damn awesome guitar. Wish I kept it honestly.

Well, after playing one, I'm a convert, too!

The funny thing is? In a tremendous bout of GAS and excessive-ness, I broke down and bought the Pro Mod San Dimas 1 as well. Saw one on Reverb that was in the ballpark for what I would spend given it's <ahem> short comings. As it turns out, the guy had modded it so, I played the legitimate but over-used card of: "it's not stock so, I can offer this amount. Basically, I got a mint condition Pro Mod with a pro set up and fret dressing, an extra pick up and a gig bag for 7 bills. Not too shabby.

My plan is to sell the Blackouts he has in there as well as the JB he's sending and putting in a SH-14 Custom Alt 8 I have sitting in my workshop as well as a new '59. If it proves worth keeping, I'll drop a new real deal OFR in it and have a killer ax for 7 bills and change.

Cool, I've always wanted a JEM. So these are MIJ again? I demoed a 70V a couple years ago and wasn't impressed in the least, it was overpriced Indonesian-made crap. The MIJ Pro Mods easily won the head-to-head at that time for me (I went with the Dreamsicle).

The Sea Foam Green & the Blue Floral JEMs and the White & Black Universes are made in the Premium factory in Indonesia.

I like the color of that one, and I don't like the way most JEMs look. Nice choice!

As Shramiac pointed out, these are made in Ibby's Indonesian Premium factory. I admit, I was a little apprehensive about laying out that much cash for an Indonesian made ax and that's why I tried one out first. The one I played was no piece of crap.
