  • NGD- Hamer Cali, Naturally

    For those who have excellent memories (or no life) and actually remember that 80% of my posts here are about Hamer Californians, this will not come as a shocker.

    Scored an '88 USA Hamer Cali Std. last week. Unremarkable, save for the fact that it's missing a reversed head stock, "boomerang" inlays and an ebony board.

    But wait! A quality shredder like this, while missing critical components and features, is STILL an excellent canvas for my latest round of modding! And what modding this will be! The only original part(s) left on this when completed will be the body wood and the cable jack.

    * Custom ordered maple/maple board neck w/ reversed head, stainless steel 6150 frets, black boomers, and a gun oil finish. Mmmm.

    * New Schaller Lock Meister trem

    * SD Jason Becker Perpetual Burn HB bridge and HotRails neck p'ups replacing the EMG 81/SA.

    * CTS volume pot, Gotoh black 3 way toggle (replacing the dreaded Strat-style blade switch)

    * Schaller Strap Locks

    * new paint!

            Update:
            Neck construction is proceeding nicely and looks kickass! I've gutted the body and removed all hardware and have sanded it down to the wood. I will drill 'n' fill for the toggle swap on Weds. Then I need to decide on a paint scheme.:dunno:

            I have an SD Perpetual Burn and a Hot Rails ordered. The toggle switch and new Schaller Floyd w/ big block are in.

                  Yeah, that does look great.

                  Hardly wait to see it finished.

                    Me, too.

                    Snagged some more hardware for it- new locking nut, posts, CTS 500K pot, and a Switchcraft input jack. Just need to figure out how I'm going to paint it.

                      How's the body look sanded down? Maybe just tung oil it or something for a natural look ...

                        Nah. Mahogany is a great tone wood but leaves me cold when it comes to aesthetics. It's poop colored. Now, if it were alder, ash or maple...

                          Ah, I see. Thought it might have been an alder body on there.
                          I personally don't mind tung oiled mahogany; stripped the neck of my Hamer and found a great three-piece neck that got the tung oil treatment.

                            Yeah, but not a lot of folks see the back of the neck when you're on stage.
