Variax 300 users question

I decided to break out my old Variax 300 and I can't figure out what I am doing wrong on something.
I am using Workbench as an interface to my laptop and I set up a nice hollow body Rick type guitar with toaster pickups and the tuning altered to A (like a capo on the 5th fret). I saved it to custom 1 preset 1. When I unplug the Variax from Workbench and then access the preset I get the guitar model I created but I don't get the tuning alteration. What the heck am I doing wrong?

I don't use a Variax, but I see people talk about them often on the L6 page.

At some point recently, one of the updates knocked out one of the older Variax/workbench models. They just don't work anymore.
