It's not unreasonable to assume he looked it up before (or after) buying it from whomever he bought it from. He's also probably tried to sell it as a collectible already. However, if the collector crowd snubbed him, citing the wear and tear, yet he thinks or even knows that the vast majority of collectors can either do the work themselves, or have it done cheap enough by "their buddy", that he'd see it flipped within a week.

Ergo, he's holding our for top dollar and today's value, which forces the flippers to hold onto it until it goes up again.

Doesn't matter to him whether you're a flipper or not, because from his perspective, you're just saying that you're not. He has no evidence to the contrary.

The internet (and time, actually) have made the old "doesn't know what he's got" shops all but a myth. 20 years ago you could find more shops who only knew Gibson and Fender and Gretsch, and who still believed Epiphones were made in Michigan, and brands like Kramer, Jackson, Charvel, Ibanez, and Dean were no better than Cort, Hondo, Aria, and Arbor, and you could score major deals (to balance out the major fucking they gave people who were down on their luck and took whatever they could get for it).

However, people who knew about those brands and their popularity did wind up running those same shops eventually, and while they may not have kept up with the details of USA vs Japanese models, they at least had some knowledge beyond Gibson, Fender, and Gretsch. Now that those people are closing up shop, they're more aware of what's what regarding those old dusty, beat-up models that everyone's trying to get cheap.

You can still find really great deals. I bought my Fender None More Black for $1000. I could have flipped it that day for $1750. I chose to keep it and add a Floyd.

Yeah that's absolutely true. He kept bringing up that he hasn't seen one sell for less than $1000. He keeps referring to that reverb link and those listed on eBay. I told him that maybe, maybe that special buyer might show up and pay top dollar for it, but not in that condition. That guitar is in pretty rough shape. I wish I took a pic of that chunk of paint (about 1/8" deep) that's missing from the body and the dings and chips off the headstock and overall condition of the finish. I was being extremely generous by offering $200 for it. If he won't budge from that then he can surely keep it and I won't lose sleep over it.

When it comes to guitars like that the price they sell for is almost 100% based on condition. I would offer him $300 and tell him he can keep the case UNLESS its the original case that came with the guitar. Then.. I might up my offer to $325 cash money. You know he paid $50 for it.
Reality is this.. if you cleaned it up its still going to have the damage. It will just be cleaner. If you list it on Ebay and you paid $325 for it you could probably get $400 which would at least cover the Ebay and Paypal fees so you would get your money back.
If this helps at all... if that shop was local I would have ran over there today on my lunch hour and bought it out from under you!

It'a fixable that's for sure since most of the damage is on the body. But even if I fill out the missing chunk and re paint it, wouldn't that kill its value because it no longer has its original finish? My main interest with that guitar would be to sell it for a profit, and if I buy it for $300+ I don't see me making much money if any.

But it of course there's always the option of keeping it and adding a pretty cool and fairly rare guitar to my collection.

I'd try to color match it and touch it up. Buff it out. You might not get $2000 for it, but depending on the market and how you price it, you could probably double your money without a whole lot of effort. But I don't buy guitars to flip for profit, so I'm not really experienced with all that.

If I could sell it for about twice as much for what I bought it for I'd be happy with it. My uncle is a very good luthier so I know he can restore it to showroom condition of I want.

Patience it what that would take to flip it honestly. You can make the cash on it but it would sit in reverb for 6 months.

Yeah definitely. If I get rid of it in less than a year that would be quite something. I'm really pondering if to show up later today with $300 cash.

After some offers and many counter offers, he let it go for $300. I think I got a fair deal, the condition is not all that bad after I took a real good look at it before giving away the money. But yeah here it is, HNGD to me!

                      ok now the blemishes.
                      Bottom of body

Upper "wing" or whatever you call that.

And here's the ugliest one by the pots.

I think it's not all that bad and that should be fixable without spending too much money on it.

I like it. Nice score. Touch it up, make sure it plays and sounds good and be patient when you sell it. There is a collectors market for that guitar but its a small one. You need to find it. Ebay is your best bet because it gets the most looks. If you list a guitar like that on Craigslist you won't get much action unless you are really lucky.

Thanks guys! Yeah put about an hour yesterday polishing the frets and cleaning her up. She actually looks quite nice now. Plugged her in with the old strings and happy to hear that even those 30 year old pots are still good. Removed the pick guard and I can tell I'm the first to remove those screws out.
Pretty cool that signature at the back of the pickup.

Frets 20-22 first round of polishing.

i have a feeling I won't be interested in flipping this guitar. Can't wait to string it up and play it!

Does she cleans up nice or what?

gonna plug it into a friend's monster rig (Cameron head with Marshall 4x12 cab and a bunch of effects) and hear how she sings!
