  • NGD: Ibanez RG570

Just brought this over from S. Korea. Not 100% sure of the year but have contacted Ibanez. This was part of the Genesis Collection released late 2013 to reissue some of the classic Ibanez RG models. Super thin neck on this beast. The neck is also upgraded to a 5 piece which is an upgrade over the 1988 RG550 I had as my first serious guitar.

    Very nice.
SO the 5 piece neck, are those little stripes considered 2 of the pieces? Why so thin? What wood are they?

Yes the stripes are strips of walnut to reinforce the maple. Thin to shred!

I think he was asking why the walnut strips were so thin... That is the current design. Seems to work.

Are they walnut stripes or carbon fiber? I would think that wood veneer that thin would provide no added strength. Any experts out there?

it is for looks. breaks up the clash that the wood grain from the maple strips. besides there are more than 5 strips of wood there technically as there are added on wood wings on the headstock. the walnut lines are for looks.

As far as looks go, I think the thin stripes make guitars look cheap. Because it looks like 3 pieces slapped together with a thin layer of a binding agent(glue) holding them together.
Whereas the thicker stripes make it looks like 5 wood pieces.

As far as the strength goes...
Any extra pieces are going to add strength because of the opposite angled grain. But like the rest of you, something that thin isn't going to have the strength that we have come to expect from the 5 piece necks.

here's a question for you guys:
I never agreed with counting a headstock and fretboard as pieces. A 3-piece neck shouldn't be neck-headstock-fretboard, IMO.
But, since the general consensus is to count them...
Are these 5-piece necks really 5-piece necks or are they 7-piece necks (when they have a separate headstock and fretboard)?

Honestly I had never heard of counting the fretboard and headstock as neck pieces until just now. I also read somewhere that these newer necks don't have a scarf joint which eliminates one of the weak spots.

Yeah, the "5 piece neck" thing in this case is kinda misleading. The veneer does nothing for strength whatsoever. It is purely cosmetic. However even if it is technically just a 3 piece neck, there's nothing at all wrong with that. A 3 piece neck is FAR more stable than a 1 piece neck.

...and no, fretboard and headstock do not count towards how many pieces a neck is.

3 piece or 5 piece refers to the neck wood laminations.

This is a true 5 piece neck:

Very nice. I had never heard of this Genesis Colletion series. Is the neck thickness and width the same as the originals or wider like some of the newer ones ? My favorites are the 98-02 Wizard necks with the bubinga stripe. When they went to the "Prestige" necks, they just don't feel the same.

Technically, those two little strips of walnut would be considered two of the five pieces, even if they are very thin.

Though, when I think of a five-piece neck, it would usually be like what Zeegler posted, or this Carvin.

Cool Ibanez... MIJ but not Team J Craft or Prestige? Weird.

Did someone say 5 piece neck?

I think the Genesis serie was release in 2013.

Congratz! I got 3 late 80s/early 90s RG and they are awesome instruments for the price I grabbed them.

                              I still have my RG560 from 1987.
Still an awesome guitar to this day.
