I'm suddenly reminded of an Iron Maiden DVD I watched many years ago. It had these guys (pictured below) making their own cardboard guitars and using them to play air guitar while headbanging to early metal bands. They wanted guitars with "straight cuts" because they were easier to cut.

A neighbor kid who used to come to my house for lessons was more into designing & making guitars than playing them. Problem is he was far from a craftsman. More like a wood butcher. He would come to my house with pieces of construction grade pine, glued, together, and rough cut in shapes like in this post. He sanded these bodies for 5 or 10 min, then applied some tempera or brush acrylic from art class. He would show me these hacked up pieces of wood and ask, "So what kind of tremolo should I buy now?"

I instantly thought of this thread again when this white 23-fret Mantis appeared today on my local classifieds website for CAD$350 (USD$260.89)

                  So bad that it's gooooood!

It just occurred to me that its shape is reminiscent of a Dean ML. Can you imagine Dimebag Darrell playing one of these when he was known as Diamond Darrell?
