  • Martin D15 opinions

A local guy wants to trade me his Martin D15 (Mahogany top) for my Mesa Boogie Nomad 55 1 x 12 combo. Its the 3 channel combo.
I looked them up on Ebay sold transactions and they seem to be worth about the same amount of money used. I don't really need the Mesa and I could actually use a nice acoustic. Has anyone ever played or owned one? Its NOT the newer D15M.

Mahogany tops are different, some people like, some don't. Here's a good thread that seems pretty close to my findings:

I had the chance to get a D15 that belonged to my girlfriend's uncle when he passed away, but passed on it mainly due to the fact they don't have electronics. I had a mexican Martin with mahogany top for a while, but it sounded to bland for me and I traded it in on a Martin Gpcpa5 with spruce top that sounded much better. I have an all mahogany Taylor 526e that sounds awesome, so as usual, it comes down to the sound quality of the particular guitar you are looking at.

I bought a new acoustic in 1997 and played it about 5 times. Just sayin....

A mahogany top doesn't sound correct. You want quarter sawn spruce that can vibrate.

Mahogany tops are fine. It's warmer than spruce as a top wood.

It sounds great for finger and flat picking. Very warm and balanced.
