I had always thought that Performance was Japan-based. According to one of the links that Eddie provided above, it appears to be true.

Maybe it started out as an American company and then the Japanese dudes bought the store and the name. Appears to be foreign owned to me. Not that it matters. Good guitars are good guitars no matter who builds 'em.
