The Warmoth project is FINISHED!!!!! Pic's inside!!
Re: The Warmoth project is FINISHED!!!!! Pic\'s inside!!
Thanks guys for all the kind words, it's appreciated!! As for how much I have in her, I know that in the body and neck alone, I have about $520.00. I had all the parts here to finish it with the exception of the neck single coil that I paid $30.00 for, and the nut which was around $10.00/$15.00. Ballpark, I'm gonna say about $650.00 or so..... If you can score the parts used, or already have them it makes it a little easier.
The neck is fast and fret access is great, I've got the action set pretty low (don't know exactely as I haven't measured it but it's around an 1/8th inch) with no fret buzz and I haven't had to do anything to the frets, it' just as it came from Warmoth. The maple top doesn't really contribute to the tone that much as it's less than a 1/4 inch think but it looks really nice !! I too was surprised at the gloss in the finish from just the Tung oil, it's got four coats on it.... I put on a coat and let it sit for about 12 hours, then buff it with 0000 steel wool, apply another, etc... you could keep doing that as many times as you wanted. The last coat on the body, I didn't buff because I liked the way it looked like that, so I left it alone. The way the body turned out, it almost looks like where the maple top meets the alder, looks like it was "masked off" and the gloss was put on the top and not the alder. I guess the maple absorbs the Tung oil in a different way which is cool because it looks like it was meant to be that way but it really was a goof. I buffed the back of the neck though, because I wanted it really smooth. Thanks again for all the cool comments and for putting up with my constant picture posting while this little project was going on !!

stephan, nice job, and it looks great! i'm sure you're already aware, but if not, know that tung oil does NOT truly seal the wood (this info was given to me by a friend of mine who is a furniture builder), so you may need to do this once or twice a year. granted, you may need to do that for cleanliness issues anyway, but i wanted to share that. however, i think you've inspired me to go the same route with my firebird! i think i may go the espresso grounds/watco danish oil version...that should make the figuring in the quilt top come out more.

@ Nor, hey do you think they might throw some "complimentary" stuff my way then for all the potential business I might have created.... Prolly not !! Thanks again for all the cool comments on this... Beside getting a cool guitar, it kinda makes it all worthwhile to know that somebody else appreciates it too... A big to all!!! BTW, I spent about three hours of quality time with my new "baby" and the more I play her, the more I like her.... Take care and thanks again...
