I'm thinking of buying my first acoustic and have always wanted an Ovation. Anyone have any real experience with one? I have played them and a few others, but I would like to hear your thoughts.
I have a 1969 Ovation Balladeer (I think), and it's OK.
It sounds nice enough, kinda, but I would much rather have an all wood acoustic. Plus the round back is an absolute pain when sitting back and chillin.
For the amount of time I spend playing acoustic (probably two hours in the past year), its fine. If I was any more into it, I'd off the Ovation and get a Taylor though.
Chuck - that's exactly what I was thinking in regards to sitting down! It seemed to be the one thing I have kind of fixated on with the Ovation and wondered if it was just me. I don't plan on turning in my electrics, but thought it would be cool to have an acoustic - more rounded so to speak.
i had an old ovation for a while. mine was a high end model i dont know which one it played really nice but didnt sound as nice as a real wood acoustic IMO. like Chuck said Taylor, but they are expensive. for the money Seagull makes some really nice stuff. & there is always used Guilds i had a 68' D-28(i think), that sounded great & played real nice till the bridge pulled off.
really check out a seagull i think you'll be surprised how good they sound, & they play real nice too.
I love Ovations to death.. but lately I'm tired of them. I want a nice Carvin acoustic instead. Forget Taylors and Martins. A Seagull sounds just as good as a Taylor IMO.. and a cardboard box with rubber bands on it sounds just as good as a Martin.
word, you just haven't picked up the right taylor yet... ...i do agree that ,for the money, the seagulls sound great but i've played a taylor that would curl your toenails... ...d.m.
I played one once. It played and sounded ok, from what I remember, but I didn't like the feel of the round back on my stomach. Roundback guitars and round bellies don't mix!
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I've played about ... 5 All of them were their highest end guitars. So
Well, hey there Word, how about just slapping a huge "I Have No Idea What A Real Nice Acoustic Sounds Like, Therefore Have No Business Offering My Opinion Here" sign on this post so we don't have to read it, huh?

I think that I have played enough guitars of each brand to make an opinion on each so there.
Word, I am officially damn tired of you throwing your misguided and uninformed opinions everywhere around here.
You've played a few high end guitars in stores and therefore you are all of the sudden qualified to tell us your opinions on the tonal qualities and differences of, say the 710 series vs. the D35s, right?
The gentleman was asking for an opinion. Because he is on the JCF, I would bet he was rather hoping for and expecting an informed opinion. So explain to me exactly how you helped?
Word, you may be able to move your fingers quick, but your typing is starting to sound a lot like your playing.
I was ONLY poking fun man!! That's the point of the emoticons.. God..
So, you're saying that until I've played over 20 Martins and Taylors, then I can't give an opinion on it? I have every right to give an opinion on a guitar whether I've played only 1 or 20.
Look dude.. CALM DOWN... you could have emailed me about this...
No sprout, I'm not gonna calm down. YOU sit the fuk down and listen.
So, you're saying that until I've played over 20 Martins and Taylors, then I can't give an opinion on it?
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thats exactly what I'm saying. If you cannot offer the man advice based on real world experience, then don't bother posting. You obviously know zero about acoustic guitars, and thats fine. But don't give advice where you don't know, ok?
I have every right to give an opinion on a guitar whether I've played only 1 or 20.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">There is a hell of a lot more to being a contributing member of a forum like this than posting your ass off on every topic wether you know about the topic at hand or not.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Right. There have been a few jokers here in the past who have hidden behind that same logic, ie;"I can say any jackass thing I want, and as long as I put an emoticon after it, its fine."
Fellow Forum members, I'm sorry I wasted your time with this, but I am not sorry for my statements. I've just read enough from Word on everything and yet nothing.
Ovations are OK. Keep in mind they were originally designed to help reduce feed back in amplified situations like live and recording. The rounded back is in a theory a ramp for sound bouncing as to not let it get back to the same spot twice to creat feedback. If it was me I would go for a Martin. Yeah Taylors are nice but not the tone I look for in an acoustic. I've played an example at many differnt times of just about every Taylor made. ( I have this advantage working at a dealer), The one that struck me having the best tone to my ears was a 414CE with tha Koa back and sides. Very unique tone and plenty of balance.
I still prefer the Martins though. More bottom end and much better build quality with a mortis and tenon joint as opposed to a bolt on neck. I like a smooth and responsive bass with enough treble to be clear and definitive without sounding thin. But that's just me.
I would take an HD28 over a Taylor any day.
even a 910. I played a D45VR a while back and I just strummed a open G chord and nearly orgasmed from the tone. It was angelic. totally amaizing guitar. But a bit pricey at 7500 bucks.
And you can get an all solid Martin for less than 900 bucks. with a case.
