  • Squire Fat Strat 7-string, hmmmm.

I have been checking out this Squire 7 string Strat for about 3 years now and am almost ready to put the $300 bucks on it. It's "Pre Owned", but unplayed. From what I was told some guy bought it to learn on and didn't realize it had seven strings. Probably a bulls#&t story, but it could be true. I checked it out and the body, neck, frets, electronics are all good and i have noticed that it stays in tune very well and has a good acoustic sound unplugged. It has a bucker in the bridge and 2 singles, 2 point trem, 22 med-jumbo frets, rosewood board and one of the most comfortable 7 string necks I have ever played with. It just so happens that I am in need of a 7 string in a big way right now. I played it through a Peavey amp that could make a vintage 57 Strat or a USA Custom Shop Jackson sound like a Hondo. I can't say that I can fairly judge it in it's plugged in capabilities. Give me some feed back. I can't seem to find anything on them.

Well, the pickups can always be changed out. I don't think I've ever seen one of these before, so I can't comment. Sorry.

I've played the neck thru 7 string Squire Stagmaster. I would guess the neck profile is the same exept the neck thru was painted but I liked how it was put together. My only complaint is that Fender should have used an angeld back neck for that model but this Fender so it's never going to happen.

True Xenophobe.........one question though, should I put a high output humbucker such as a Seymour Duncan Distortion 7 or a milder output like say a DiMarzio PAF Pro? I have heard that lower output pickups do a 7 strings tone some justice. I have had one 7 string. It was an Ibanez RG7420. I had alot of problems tuning down to A due to the trem and my left wrist did not like the neck profile at all. I got carpel tunnel syndrome temporarily. It went away after I got rid of the guitar. The Squire has a real nice C shape to it that is alot easier on the hand and wrist for me. I really like C shape necks. They relieve alot of stress on my hands and are easier to shred on for me. I thought about one of the new upgradded Schector Omen 7's, but I'm not so sure it would be any better than the Squire build or material wise. Pickup replacement is a must in almost any low end guitar. This Squire is an exception though. It feel like it should say Fender on it and cost 3 times as much. I'm surprized. It's kinda funny lookin anyway with a Fender headstock and seven tuners on it. I guess a decent bridge bucker, add a couple more springs to the trem and maybe some locking tnuners and this bad boy would do the trick for my needs. I'll see if the lady who owns the shop will let me take it home and try it on my rig to see if I like it first.

If it's been in the shop at $300 for 3 years I'd think you could negotiate a better price. I've seen the neck-thru
Stagemasters go for $269 brand new, and they have a Floyd. I saw a bolt neck Stagemaster 7 on Ebay that was up for a $99 starting bid with no reserve. I saw
no one had bid on it with 2 days to go, but did't follow the end. You could do
a search of completed auctions to get an idea of what they go for.

If you dig the bird in your hand, that's
cool, but you may get a better deal with
that info in hand. And if she won't let you take the guitar home, ask her if you can bring your amp to the store.

P.S.: Just looked at my Musicians Friend catalog and the 6-string version of the one you want is being
blown out at $169.99, Item 510446B.
          More price negotiating info.

Yes..........you are very right. I plan to make her bend on the price. I figure she will wittle it down to at least $200. She will make deals.I have been a customer at that shop since I was a kid. I would be willing to bet she just wants to get rid of it. I'm going in today. I will report on my attempts at a good deal tonight.
