Fat Strat Floyd Rose, anyone?

Anybody know anything about these? From what I can find online, it seems that there's a version with a Floyd Rose II, which I'm not interested in, but there's also a version with the real McCoy. Anybody know?

I have yet to play a decent Fender with a Floyd, so I built my own!
I basically combined my favorite strat features and built a "Players edition" strat.

I started with a Jap Contemoarary body. Why? It's Alder(there is NO substitute for a strat) and it has a body edge input jack like a true shred guitar should.

I then filled the lower hole of the "System 1 " Kahler that comes standard on these Contemp strat then redrilled it to fit Floyd spacing.

I added a H-S-S pickguard and a brand new Schaller Floyd I had laying around. Now, since I set the stage for sound and resonace, I wanted the perfect strat neck for me. I went looking hard for '57 reissue neck and was SHCOKED when I seen what they get for em on the 'Bay! [img]images/icons/shocked.gif[/img]
Luckiy for me, I found a perfect ulternative. I found a Fernandes strat head neck that went to a Retro '57 Fernandes strat. And as a bonus, it already had a slot for an R-2. I added some nice Gotohs and Va-La! The perfect Fat strat was born.

The other cool thing about the Contemp strat is the cool metallic finishes they came in. mine is this Grayish-Green mettalic that looks killer and aggressive. AND, like a USA strat, the contemp strats have the micro-tilt adj.

I'm moving onto my next project so i would consider selling this one if anyone was interested and i gurantee this one will play circles around anything Fender has to offer.

I've played both the Fat and Double Fat Floyd Rose Classic Strats. The double fat Strat was first class all the way. It needed a hotter bucker at the bridge, but thats just me. The Fat Strat was total crap. The fret ends were sharp and undressed and the neck had some bow issues. The wood grain had a few too many knots in it and could be seen due to it being a 3 tone sunburst. If I had the excessive amount of cash they wanted for the Double Fat Strat I would have bought it. The best advise I have for anything Fender is to go somewhere and play as many as you can or as many as they have in stock of the same model and play them until you find the best one. As far as the Fender Fat Strat goes, they sound pretty good as is, but lack decent QC in my opinion or the shop I saw em at had gotten a good deal on some 2nd's. You never know. Check for the following,

1. Bad fretwork
2. Finish flaws
3. Crooked routes for pickups on the pickguard
4. Excessive warpage of the pickguard
5. Cracked dot inlays
6. Stripped strap pegs

Sound wise, you can't seem to get much of a decent metal sound out of a Duncan Pearly Gates humbucker, but that can be fixed and isn't the pickups fault. The Pearly Gates HB is good for rock stuff, 70's and early 80's type of stuff. It's a good lead pickup, but lacks a little for full on shred. It held it's tune well like most OFR's do. The single coils sound like......well.......single coils. They match well with the HB. It's got a modified C neck shape and it feels pretty good. I like this shape after it's been broken in. I'd say after you do some playing around on a few, get one. My only thing is if I'm going to blow over a grand on a guitar I might as well buy a Jackson SL1 or SL2H now that I have had some time to get intimate with both.

The current specs list an OFR, not sure about ones with FRII's I'm afraid. I would go with Jon's advice, play a few if you get the opportunity and find the one that does it for you. [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img]

Thanks, guys. I also agree that there isn't a Fender made that I would pay over a grand for. Maybe I can catch one in a pawn shop someday. I also really love the oversized headstock on these. It looks like the Yngwie model headstock.
