• Les Paul Pickguards

Does any one else think that Gibson Les Paul pickguards make them look gay? If I had a les paul with one, I definetly take it off.

I think they look good. Since they've been making that damn thing for 50 years now, it's hard to imagine it without one.

You've never seen one without a pick guard? A lot of people take them off and I believe there's even a few models that come from the factory without one. Being an archtop, they are not necessary (at least for me) and every Les Paul I've had, I've taken the pick guard off first thing.

I've seen them without pickguards, it's just that to me "The Gibson Les Paul" looks incomplete without a pickguard.

I think if you wana see one, all you have to do is look at an ESP Eclipse. *thinks* i could be wrong though. I'm too lazy to check right now lol

Re: Les Paul Pickguards

This years Les Paul Standard (the one with the Flame Top and Burstbuckers) doesn't come with one. Neither does the Studio Plus, and both of them look cool.

I'd take it off yeah. Or, replace it with a fancy wood pickguard (this company made flame maple ones, if you stained it a similar colour to the finish it would look dead cool. I think it was customshopusa.com or customusaparts.com or something like that.

Here ya go. they also do a quilt one. Seems pretty cheap to me as well.

I think they are not needed.

Re: Les Paul Pickguards

it depends on the guitar and colour etc...

a zakk wylde style busseye looks stupid with one whereas a plain black or white one can go with or without,

it really depends on the individual guitar, binding and colours all affect whether i think it is better with or without

Re: Les Paul Pickguards

It's a design element that has to be color coordinated. The Joe Perry LP with the white 'guard looks like crap IMO, but a Black Beauty looks great with a black 'guard. A white Custom has to have the black 'guard as well. My Trans Red Standard has a creme pickguard and creme pickup rings, but black on Cherry Sunburst looks odd. A white 'guard on a white Custom might look nice, but also might be TOO white.
Graphics and guaards are also crappy.

And an SG with the "Special" pickguard (huge one, also used to be on the older Customs) looks totally g-a-y. I prefer the look of the 70's SG STD with the smaller pickguard.

It is all the players preference. I like em.

Re: Les Paul Pickguards

I have a White Les Paul Custom and I think the black pickguard looks O.K. on it. Of course, there was a guy selling snakeskin painted Les Paul pickguards on E-Bay a while back. Every time I search however I never find the Les Paul ones, just the Strat snakeskin pickguards
Anyone know where to get a LP snakeskin pickguard?

I had the pickguard on mine for a while but ended up taking it off years ago. It's black, but with the pickup rings and binding, it looks good as it is.

I like mine without the pickguard.
