Hi to you all
i wanted to hear your opinions about the fender malmsteen model. have you played it, how does it sound and feel (especially that scalloped fretboard - is it hard to get use to it) and how do you rate it as a shred guitar for the avarege player ???
thanks

Re: fender malmsteen model

I have not played an Yngwie model, but I did own at one time a parts strat with a scalloped fretboard, so I guess I can give you my opinion on the scalloped fretboard.

It plays really nice. Real nice for shredding, and arpeggios are a joy to play on them. It took no time at all to get used to playing it. All it needs is a light touch and you're ready for amazing vibrato heaven.

I've got two of them - one a japanese model and one a 2002 US model. US model much nicer. Like Word say's the neck is about the sweetest thing I've ever played. Definitely play one (if you already haven't) first. I got my 2002 for under $1150 brand new. Took about three weeks to get direct from Fender to the dealer. The biggest adjustment (for me) was getting used to the single coils. It first felt like trying to drive with your parking brake on.

Well the bridge pup is the HS-3 which is considered a stacked hum, but it's definitely not as hot and powerful as a real hum.

I got one a couple of months ago... love the neck and as Word said, "a joy to play". The pickups need to be driven pretty hard to sound good IMO, otherwise they are wimpy if you're used to humbuckers. (Must be why Yngwie endorses an overdrive pedal)

I just got a Schecter Scalloped from a board member hear and love it. It is a different feel that I can not as yet describe. I will need more time on it. The "touch" is different.

Word, why did you get rid of the parts guitar? In the end, did the scallops make a difference?

I played a scalloped Yngwie Strat about 5 years ago. I didn't play it long enough to get used to it, it just felt weird. I'd love the chance to sit down with one again and try it out more.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I got rid of it because it I needed to fund another purchase, plus I'm not a fan of vintage trems.. this one have a gold one from a Fender.

The scallops didn't make a speed difference to me, but it was a LOT easier and a whole lot of fun to play!

If you don't mind me asking, which member scalloped the fretboard?

Yup, the HS-3 pickup (and YJM in middle and neck positions, at least on the current models) is made to be used with a good overdrive pedal.

The Schecter in question might be a Yngwie Signature model. He was endorsed by Schecter in 1986. Before that he was endorsed by Aria. I collect all Malmsteen signature guitars and I prefer the Schecter to the Fender. The Schecter comes with the Schecter locking trem which works flawlessly and the h/s/s monstertone pickups with the push pull coil tap for the bridge. Mid 80's Texas made Schecter strats are amongst the finest strat type guitars ever made IMHO. I have a vintage white one with black hardware and a scalloped rosewood neck and it is very very nice.

I have two Schecters from that era. They are great, but I am NOT a fan of that particular trem. I have one of mine and I just use it now as a hard tail. I also have a Fender HRR, customized guitar that has a scalloped fretboard (not original.) It is actually new to me, but I have been digging the scalloped board and can't wait to get it out of the shop/
