• Anyone else ever in this position? Advice needed....

Hey all.. I will try to keep this tale of woe short as I'm sure many of you have experienced certain elements of the following story.

In 1999 I ordered a custom shop BC Rich Warlock which I received 10 months later. Guitar was to my specs, with ridiculous hot rod flames, single humbucker, and crazy flame inlays. It was gorgeous. Soon afterwards, for the first time in my life I found myself in a financial situation due to a sick pet and being out of work. As you all know where this is going, I sold the Warlock on Ebay at a significant loss, but enough to take care of bills and hold me over till I was working again. People often ask me why I sold the warlock and not one of my many other guitars. Quite simply, the Warlock was newest and while be an amazing axe, did not have the relationship that my guitars that have been with me for 10 years had. It was the least painful to let go.

Anyway..

Here we are 2 years later and guess who should contact me, but the buyer of my custom shop warlock. He is looking to sell it and was offering it to me as courtesy. Now I hadn't thought about the Warlock for some time, but the thought of having it back started to grow on me. It was one of the Last guitars Bernio Rico worked on before he sadly passed away.

The buyer (who was in Hong Kong) tells me his brother has brought it to the states where he lives and that he would have him contact me. (I had browsed through his winning auctions when he had bought the guitar off of me, and he must have bought $200,000 of guitars off ebay that month alone)

Finally, I get an email from the brother. Asking price is $1600 more than he bought it from me from (and more than I could get a brand new custom shop made for). Needless to say, I was pissed. At this point I realize they are trying to milk the fact that it may hold some sentimental value for me. As much as I'd like to get it back, I'm not gonna allow myself to get openly screwed. I throw back a figure that was $400 more than they had bought it from me from. Finally they decide to bring their asking price down to $1100 more than they had purchased it from me for. I throw back a figure $300 less than that and they say no dice. So I say I'll have to think about it and left it at that.

My question to all of you is have you ever had the chance to rebuy a guitar you regretted selling and the seller tried to use it to his advantage? What did you do? Right now, I'm feeling I'll either wait him out and see if he is willing to drop it or give up on the idea alltogther as much as it pains me. I have a feeling he cannot possibly move this guitar at the price he is asking..it is just too much of a custom job.

thanks for the conversation,

Rich

Tell him to dive into your rice patty and blow you!

Dude, think about it. If you had the guitar made to order once why wouldn't you have another EVEN better one made now?

A guitar is nothing but a piece of wood and electronics bro, it's what it has to say in it's master's hands that count.

Tell him to take a giant suck!

wow o.O What a dick! I wouldn't wait him out if you REALLY want it back, because he'd probably just sell it to someone else. But if it takes enough out of your funds that makes you uncomfertable, i wouldn't buy it. That's a tough situation dude. Either way, he gets 1,100+ dollars profit. Did you explain to him how much you payed for it?

What a douche!! Tell him to suck your ass and that you'll pay him exactly the bargain that you sold it to him for. Tell him it's now a used instrument and the value has depreciated for the amount of time he's owned it!

If I just HAD to have it back, I'd offer him what he paid. Shipping would be on him.

Otherwise, I'd tell him to take a flying leap.
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

Thanks Guys for putting this into perspective for me. I got so swept up in the idea of having it back, I wasn't really thinking straight. I'm gonna do exactly as you guys suggested.. offer what he paid and then tell him good luck selling it elsewhere. I will walk away from this with respect for myself. And yes, he knows what I paid initially.

Thanks again,

Rich

It's only worth what your willing to pay. But this guy is obviously playing the sentimental value card on you. How bad do YOU want it back? GOOD LUCK MAN!

Nothing wrong with selling for a profit.

BUT...

This moron is trying to make a profit off you while trying to pass himself off as a caring person. If he can afford 200k worth of guitars I'm sure he can afford to sell it back at a reasonable price. And you can get another custom made for your original price.

Dude, you should go to every guitar/classifieds forum on the net and tell everyone what this guy is trying to do. See if he can sell it then. Ha!

I sold my Dinky Reverse Professional and a Crate GFX15 to a friend in 2000 for $500. A month later I walked into a pawn shop and there it was amp and all. The pawn shop was asking $899 for the guitar and $399 for the amp. They had the guitar listed as a "Custom Jackson". I told them to piss up a rope. Anyway, if the guy won't come down, then the hell with it. He is obviously trying to unload this guitar on you assuming that it has sentimental value to YOU. If it didn't mean enough to you to keep it back then, then it's not worth shelling out more than you sold it for. Everybody is right, save your cash for another custom. If these guys shelled out $200,000 for guitars in amonth they are most definately trying to make money. Don't be a victim and wait for the e-mail that the guy will probably send you sometime soon offering it to you for the origional price you sold it for.

Thank god all the guitars I get attached to are way too cheap to be worth anything!! I'd tell him to jump off a damn bridge for trying to play off your emotions, regardless of his intentions!! <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yep, I think Jon's nailed it here. Given the volume they were snapping up, I'd guess they're probably flipping the goods overseas where prices can be prohibitive. Yours may have proved a bit tougher than anticipated to move due to its unusual nature so now they're looking to get it off the books. Odds are you'll get another shot at it just as soon as they figure out that you've wriggled off the hook. Good luck!
