  • Need pup advice...

Ok guys, I picked up a Schecter C-1 Classic off Ebay for about $300, the catch was it doesn't come with pups. I'm thinking of either a Zakk Wylde set up (I don't have any guitars with EMGs and never have) or trying to wire it like a PRS with the 5 way selector knob and PRS pups in it (never had a guitar with this set up either). I'm looking to get a different sound out of this guitar than I am used to. My other guitars all have SDs in them(mix of JB, Distortion, and Invader) except for my LP. Any other interesting pup ideas are welcome. Thanx guys!

You want a VERY different sound? Put a P-90 in the neck, and a Duncan Metal Live Wire in the brigde, that guitar will sound COMPLETELY different from anything you own, promise!!

Seriously, you can try the EMG's, they are really popular among metal musicians, or you can go with the X2N. Or try a Bill Lawrence. The possibilities are endless, what sort of sound are you looking for?

Yuck.. I absolutley despise PRS guitars with that 5 way knob.

My suggestion would be, if you don't have any DiMarzio pups, would be to go with a Tone Zone in the bridge, and a PAF Pro or Humbucker from Hell in the neck.

I bought the same guitar off ebay and have experimented with two sets of EMG's. First I got cream pickup rings with gold metalflat rings on top for looks. Then I put in a set of cream EMG 85/60. It didn't look as good as I thought, this guitar is heavy and solid - much more so than any other korean mahogany body guitar I've owned. Second set was a regular black EMG 81/85 and this is the ticket. It's very chunky and harmonics out the ass. Unfortunately I may end up selling it soon because I've over extended myself recently by purchasing an SG Classic, two Les Pauls, and two ESP grynches.

I'm thinking about EMG 81/85's myself. It's good enough for Kirk Hammet, Zakk Wylde, James Hetfield and Kerry King as well as Jeff Henneman. I would have to say Tattooed Carrot has the answer for ya. If not that, try a DiMarzio Super Distortion. I thought it would be alot like my Seymour Duncan Distortion, but it wasn't even close. The Dimarzio is alot warmer and requires alot of mids to get a great sound out of it. I had to learn the hard way after I hooked mine up wrong and was using my sucked mids setup. Now I have a totaly new sound and I like it. As far as a DiMarzio neck, Word hit the spot there. Try an active bridge and passive neck setup. I played a Peavy Wolfgang model set up with an EMG 85 in the bridge and a DiMarzio of some kind in the neck. Two different worlds in one guitar.

OK the suspense is killing me now! I'm picking up my guitar today after having the Zakk set installed. I had the 5 way replaced with a 3 way blade and its now wired for two volumes and no tone( I had the knob closest to the neck left dead). I can't wait to get my hands on it!!!!

                  Why no tone?

                    I currently use two 81's.

because I'm cool like that. I think they need a new battery though...they ahve been sounding different, or mabye i'm just more deaf. whatever.

Well I have the guitar back and I gotta say I like the EMGs. They didn't exactly blow me away like I hoped but they sound really good through my set-up.

I have never really used tone controls on any of my guitars and I prefer having seperate volumes for both pups so I have all my guitars wired for two volumes. The only two of my guitars that have tone controls right now are my LP and my SL1(only cause I haven't figured out if I want the two singles wired to a volume and the Invader in the bridge wired to the other).
