Re: Just got my Les Paul

I do agree they're horribly overpriced, though. I haven't seen any that had structural flaws (miniscule gaps in binding are trivial at best).

The only flaw I have on my Ace Frehley Les Paul is that Ace's face looks a little too smooth and youthful, and we all know that aint right...........

Nice Les Paul. I have had lots of them. That is a pretty unusual color for a studio.

I don't think the "good ones" are as few and far between as some people make them out to be although I have seen quite a few bad ones. The shop I teach at recently sold a Zakk Wylde sig that had the worst binding job I've ever seen and thats a $3500 guitar!

Right on Joe, there are a lot of good ones out there. The majority can probably be made acceptable players (even if they have cosmetic problems) but for the prices Gibsons command I expect a little more than an acceptable axe. Heck, for the price of that Zakk I could pick up 4-5 really nice USA Jacksons and almost certainly score 3-4 keepers out of the lot.

Also, a lot of people actually expect to find a flawless guitar with the perfect setup at Guitar Center so they base their judgements on that "experience".

Re: Just got my Les Paul

I base my disdain of Gibsons on what they're asking for such crap. Yeah, the majority of the Gibsons I've played have been at GC or Mars but I can tell what is a result of being in a store and what came from the factory like that. The high action, some finish flaws, missing parts, all OBVIOUSLY are store things. But the sinking finishes, sorry fretwork, and finishes that don't feel like they dried properly (check the faded V and SG especially), don't come from being tossed around by 12 year olds.

I agree with them being overpriced and then some.

The difference between a Studio and a Standard is Body and neck binding, and the price difference is $1000.

Did the older Studio model have mother-of-pearl inlays or "pearloid"? I was actually considering a new LP Studio with the pewter finish, but for that kind of money, I don't want plastic inlays.
