  • Custom Shop companies??

Hey guys, I'm trying to find a company to build a custom shop guitar for me that is very specific in the details that I want. I am trying to avoid the large companies (such as ESP, Jackson, etc) and want to find someplace that is cheaper (thus my post in the Ran Guitars thread since I have contacted them). Can anyone recommend any other small companies that do great custom work for a very reasonable price??

Here's the custom shop order that I want to get quoted:

ESP Serpent II Body and Finish
    Like this one:

Here's the modifications I'd like to that guitar:
    - No Inlays other than 12th fret (which should read CUSTOM)
    - 24 frets instead of 22
    - Neck Thru instead of bolt on
    - Real Floyd Rose
    - No logo on headstock
    - Scalloped from 20-24th fret
    - EMG 81 in bridge / EMG T (tele single) in neck
    - One volume, one Gibson 3-way toggle (like Petrucci models), no tone control
    - Maple/maple neck instead of rosewood

Anybody know who can do this kind of work for me for a good price? (Keep in mind this isn't a normal body, it's got a longer lower horn than the upper horn, similar to the Ibanez RG540PII models.)

    Thanks for your time.

    www.gmwguitarworks.com

GMW could probably do it for around $1500. They are the next best thing to the Jackson Custom shop if not toaly equal. I've never touched a GMW guitar, but several others here have and they all say they are the best when it comes to getting what you want for alot less.

i know of builders that will do that BUT they are NOT CHEAP. there prices start at around 1700 for bolt on strat types & around $2100 for neckthrus.
try GMW, most custom places charge alot because its mostly made by hand.

Depending on cost, I may just get it with no graphic. Maybe a trans stain or something...
I have a good friend with a killer GMW that looks and sounds great, I wouldn't hesitate on them quality wise, I was hoping to find other small companies that can offer this sort of thing instead of the standard larger Custom Shops.

I know alot of people don't like him but what about Ed Roman? There is also Performance Guitars in CA and of course GMW. I used to go to a guy in White Plains NY called Guiliano's Custom guitars. He made guitars for Peter Frampton for a while. His brand name at the time was Vulcan. There are a few really good builders on the BC Rich message board also.

                  Re: Custom Shop companies??

I just heard back from Ran Guitars and they gave me a quote of $1190 for what I'm asking for (with no trem included since they don't offer a real deal Floyd Rose, so I'd get that myself) -- Not a bad price at all considering the specifics of what I'm looking to get. My next main concern is the cost of taxes and duties and such when ordering from a company like that out of the country.
                  Hmm Anybody ever done that?

I've talked to Ed Roman before and he's so big of a prick that I can't stand to give him business.
He wants you to blindly throw money at him before he even shows you any interest.
