• Gibson Les Pauls

Custom or Standard? What are the major differences? What should I expect to pay for one in new or like new condition? I really love the custom in white.

Any of you guys play them? I've always wanted one but never have pulled the trigger. Now might be the time.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey man:

I sent you e-mail from work....hopefully it helped you out.....they are getting tough to find, and I think the pre 85's are definately better quality. Gibson sold out....no other way to say it.....

Why is it when you have a good thing you get greedy??

Oh well, they will have to pry my dead finners around it when I die......

    Good luck bro

always preferred customs; ebony board vs rosewood, different inlays, fully bound body, neck, head, and didn't some customs have the bottom of the body bound? (thought ace had a black one that was...)different peghead inlays, i dunno, all in all, a more "elegant" guitar.

however, them thick-ass necks can be a bit to get around at times. i was using a 71 custom for a while, and it was a sweet guitar.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">All Customs are bound on the body on top and bottom, except the LP Custom Lite, I think.

I have a White 92 and a Black Quilt 94 and they are both sweet.

[edit] the black quilt may be posted in the classifieds soon.

Hey Sully, my custom has binding out the wazoo including the back of the body. I personally like them both standards and customs because they sound different. So I have both!

            Re: Gibson Les Pauls

I just got a LP classic - it's a standard with 'aged' inlays and tuners, hot as hell pickups (most output you can get in a gibson) and a 60s profile thin neck, which is much easier to navigate than the regular ball bat necks.

Cool thing is, the classics don't run a whole lot more than the top of the line studios, and are cheaper than a standard. You oughta check one out... you might be surprised. I sure was.

I have a classic too and I love it. I had the 500t in the bridge swapped out for a 498t though. The 500t was to bright with less bass response than a Les Paul should have in my opinion.

Tough call..they both are way cool. A Std and Custom are very similar iother than fretboiarda nd cosmetic issues...I like teh Std and also the Custom so my advice would be to get one of each.

                    Here is 2 of mine:
Custom 1968 or 69 (now yellowed)

                    Std 1984(a la Ace)

I personally like the Studio, as it is a killer deal for the price. I like the others as well, but when I got my Ace Frehley Les Paul, it sure hurt the pocket book. Studios are much more pocket book friendly............

I have had both a custom and a standard. They were very cool guitars with big fat tone. My jammin buddy has a classic, I have played many times, also a very sweet guitar. But some days they felt like I was playing a coffee table. since I switched to mostly strats I find it much more comfortable. Still, I will grab another LP sometime. My collection is missing something w/o one. I just wish they would not use those sh!tty plastic tuning pegs.

Both are Mahogany and usually have the same pickups. Standard will usually have rosewood fretboard where a Custom will have Ebony. The Custom will have 5 ply binding on both sides of the body and headstock. Standard has a single ply on the top of the body and both use single ply for the neck binding. Custom has the block inlays, standard has the trapezoid, both are mother of pearl as well as both use a mother of pearl Gibson Logo but the Custom also has a "FLAG" on the headstock.

Good eye on noticing the sh!tty plastic parts on some Les Pauls, Lord of Gain.

Take a gander at the input jacks on your marshalls in your sig (yours, right?) and tell me what type of sh!tty plastic they are made of. My JCM800 has em... I'd wager yours do too.
