Re: Gibson Les Pauls

Ive never seen Ace plying a std Les Paul. I know he has a 76 Cherry Burst with three pups. That was his main guitar for years. Like this one.
Although mine has a volume and tone for each pup.
The Customs seem to have a brighter attack and a warm sustain vs the Warm attack and warm sustain of the STD.
Plus the binding on the headstock of the Custom and the back of the body. And the split diamond on the headstock of the Custom. Also now the STD have burstbuckers in them and the Customs have 57 classics in the 57 reissue and 498t and 490R in the rest of the Customs.

Re: Gibson Les Pauls

Actually, Ace's main early guitars WERE all LP Standards. TBSunburst through Destroyer, Cherry Sunbursts to around '79. He started using Customs (Black) as his main stage guitars with Dynasty. The Reunion tours he used his sig LP Customs exclusively.

Look around for a Smartwood. Sometimes you get them dirt cheap - way under a grand. There were some that had trapezoid inlays on rosewood, but mostly what you find now are dot inlays.
These go cheap mostly because they don't have the famous burst or white/black/wine red color scheme (bah Purists)
It's still a USA Gibson Les Paul

I have a LP Spotlight Special. Sweet sweet guitar. Only made in 1983... the neck is nice I ahve to say the Custom necks are way too fat for my tastes.

I like having a LP?

One of the coolest things Gibson ever did was from 81 - 83 with the string winders built into the tuning pegs on customs. I would love to find a set of those for my Classic!!

I had a Gibson V with those things on it - they're neat, but not that neat.

LP Customs rock! I've always liked them better than the Standards, for some reason. Their sound always seems tighter and more focused--plus, I just plain love ebony fretboards. Also, I've never played a Custom that had a baseball bat neck, whereas every Standard I play seems to. But I'm sure that's just my experience.

The only two guitars I truly regret not owning anymore are my old San Dimas Soloist (that was stolen years ago) and my 1981 Black Beauty LP Custom (that I sold so I could pay the rent).
