Re: Picture of Mustaine\'s new ESP DV8 on ESP\'s website
Actually it's not really possible for a string-thru to resonate more than a stopbar, as the "break points" are still at the saddles and nut. Sympathetic vibrations of the strings behind the bridge is generally minimal with a stringthru, especially if the strings are touching the rear of the bridge behind the saddles. Sure you can pluck the strings between the bridge and the holes, just as you can between the nut and tuners, but think of how much force that takes compared to the force of just the strings themselves in front of the bridge - they simply would not have enough vibration strength to make the strings behind the bridge resonate enough to affect the overall tone.
The minimal contact points that the body string ferrules creates cannot transfer or enhance the vibration of the fretted strings to the body.
It's about the same as a Kahler saddle assembly - not enough direct contact.
A stopbar tailpiece is a solid piece of steel that has two large direct-to-body contact points.

Completely agreed on the string thru thing. To me, it looks cheap. "Well, if we just drill some holes in the body and use these little plastic plugs to fill the holes in, we can save about $7 per guitar since we don't have to buy stopbars." I don't see any improvement in sustain over a stopbar, and I think the stopbar looks better. Sure is a hell of a lot easier to replace broken strings on a darkened stage, I'll tell you that much.

I've got a couple Jacksons that are string-thru, and a Carvin and Hamer with the stop tailpiece. I like both, don't really see much of a difference in sustain, but I seem to prefer the string-thru and would rather not have the tailpiece to deal with... though, it's not a big deal anyway.

I can't tell you how many times I've threatened to drill a 5"-wide string-thru hole for the high E in my King V because the damn string gets hung on the damn ferrule
Ok, here's an updated pic of Dave's new signature ESPee

Looks like a Double Rhoads to me. Hmmmmm.... maybe we can get ESP to build us our Robin Crosby Double Rhoads Big Red tribute guitars?
I gotta say though, the Jackson ripoff is getting ridiculous. First Alexi with a Rhoads now Dave with a King V. What's next??? Marty with an ESP Kelly?
