  • Help - Peavey Wolfgang questions

Found a good deal on a Peavey Wolfgang (I think...) here are the specs:

    has a flame maple top
'natural' binding - unpainted edges, top is probably close to 1/4"
    'peavey' logo on tremolo

So is this a 'USA' peavey? What's it worth? It seems to be in great shape... the 'peavey' logo'd trem threw me off, and I know they have some korean models out there.

Help! I might get it if it's a USA... thanks guys!

Yes it's USA all Wolfgang carved tops are US. The Specails are Korean. Althought there originally was a run of of US Specails before they introduced the carved top. They usually have a reall nice flame top and are a bit heavier. And hjust plain feel better and play better then the Korean ones. The trem is stock I had one on black that had that trem too. Its basically Peaveys version of a OFR.

If it is a flat top it is Korean. If it is carved it is USA. I have several USA's and Korean's and they are all equally good. The Korean's have more bottom punch though. Excellent guitars.

Ok, so Peavey's list on a korean guitar is 1600? I went to Peavey.com, identified the guitar as a special flame top... WOW.

Thats not correct. Theer are flat top USA wolfies. There is Wolfgang Special, a Wolfgang Special Flametop, A Wolfgang Standard, and a Wolfgang Standard w/ a flame top. specials are flat and standards are carved. All of these are also available with a floyd or a stop/tuneamatic.
There is a Wolfgang Quilt, which is a korean guitar. list for 699 (i think). My local dealer sells em for 499.

Re: Help - Peavey Wolfgang questions

Twister, is it a flat top or a carved (arched) top?? If it is flat than it either is an ultra rare USA custom shop model that is worth a fortune or it is Korean. If it has an arched top than it is USA made and costs around $1600.00 list but can be had at most music stores new for around $1200.00. The Korean quilt tops have peavey logo'd trems and faux (fake) binding on them that makes the top appear to be approx 1/4" thick when in actuality the top is 1/8" thick and could be considered almost a veneer. How about the tuners? If it has chrome Grover grovers or chrome tuners with no name it is either USA Wolfgang Specials or a Korean Special. Are the shallers with perloid type knobs? If so it is a USA made standard. Does the headstock say special on it? Is the neck highly figured with tons of birdseye on it? Does it have 1 volume or does it also have a tone? Give me all the details and I will absolutely let you know what it is.

Re: Help - Peavey Wolfgang questions

If the one you saw was listed on Ebay I saw it to. The seller mentioned the $1600.00 list price. He had 2 of them up at one time. 2 different colors. Both were import models. Both had Grover tuners. USA standards or custom shop models do not have Grover tuners. They all have Schallers with perloid style keys.

There are usa specials. not all are korean. The only visable diferance on a korean vs. usa is on the usa Eddie's sig is burned on the back of the headstock.

Re: Help - Peavey Wolfgang questions

That is technically incorrect drsracing. All Peavey Wolfgang guitars have the Eddy burned in signature EXCEPT the very first production run that shipped out of Korea. The reason for this is that the branding (burning) machine did not arrive in Korea until after the 1st shipment already shipped. These guitars were available mid 2002 and were fairly limited production. I verified this with Peavey directly because I have one that I pre-ordered the 1st day the factory was taking orders. The easiest way to tell the difference between Korea and USA made Specials is this:
Tuners on Korean Specials are Grovers
Tuners on USA Specials are no name
Trem on Korean Specials has a cast block and a collared nutted screw ON whammy bar.
Trem on USA Specials has a solid brass block and a screw IN (ala Fender strat) whammy bar.

Re: Help - Peavey Wolfgang questions

Really, I thought the story went that eddie didn't want his name on the korean ones so they agreed not to have the sig on it. but you're right about all the other stuff. I figure eddie's so in breach of his contract at this point he had no choice but to say yes to the korean wolfie's.

Eddy backs the Korean Exp models 100%. He does mega promotion for them overseas. He endorsed them in the USA also according to Peavey but it appears Peavey is more discrete about it. That is understandable considering Peavey is almost exclusively a USA manufacturer. In regards to Eddy not endorsing the Exp quilt tops, I emailed Peavey around 3 months ago and asked the exact question that you posted and that is what they told me.

Weird, this one has 1/4" flame maple cap with flame maple (taped off) binding. Hmm... may have to go check it out again with cash in hand... damn thing is at a pawn shop WAAAAYYYY out of town tho!

The way you're talking up these imports, I gotta go get some seat time with one next weekend, other than there's a black standard archtop at the tuckwilla GC for $599 on cleaence they've had it for like a year and a half. Since I already have a black one I couldn't buy another black one.
