Re: Fender Highway 1 finish question

    Thanks Sully.

Again Jacksonfreak, it is certain colors that lack a clear coat, not all colors (and not all the time). Grab a '58 Musicmaster and you will not find a clear coat. Ever see pics of olympic white Strats of the early 60's that are still white and not yellow? That is because there is no clear coat. Sunbursts and metallics always have a clear coat because it is essential to seal those colors. Fender skipped the clear coat often just to speed up production, so during peak production periods like 1963-1966, it is very common to find custom colors like white, black, dakota red, and Fiesta red to lack a clear coat. In the case of the Musicmaster family of guitars, they skipped clear coats to cut costs.

I don't get what you are pointing out with referring to checking. Non-clearcoated finishes check just like cleared finished do.

Check out my pre-production '56 Musicmaster to see a well worn and beaten original '56 Fender with no clear coat. Inside a 1956 Musicmaster

Ok, where do I get the stuff to clear it? I don't know a whole lot about finishing wood. I would like to paint it bright yellow, but...what can I say, I'm a product of the 80's.
I still keep practicing though.... Mostly because I hate my neighbors.-MakeAJazzNoiseHere

You will get some help there. I know several people who have been wanting to refinish their Strats in that 80's Fender Graffiti yellow. I would be surprised if Bill hasn't had some mixed yet. He should be able to do it, you just may have to pay a little more to have him go get it custom mixed. His paint system is perhaps the best do-it-yourself refinishing system around. The paint is top quality nitrocellulose in a spray can. Much better than the off the shelf Bins or Behlen stuff.
