• Gibson Faded SG opinions

There's a guy nearby me selling a Gibson Faded SG, pretty much brand spanking new w/hard case. I can probably get it for $500. They're selling for 500-550 on ebay right now.

Anyone have any experience with the Gibson faded guitars? I'm not the biggest Gibson fan but I've always liked SGs and I like the faded finish.

Any maintenace worries for the faded finish?

to me an SG has to have the Original specs. small neck heal, wider more bevelled body with wide neck joint. I really like the supremes, SG-Z or SG90 & any of the ones were they take a 61 re-issue type & go modern with it.
the fadeds are just like the specials that are CRAP with new finshes.

I thought the faded SG was cool until I saw one. I own a 70 SG Standard currently, and owned a 62 in the past. Even though those guitars are ancient, they dont have the same cheapo feel the faded has. So, the moral of the story, if you like SGs, dont get a faded. If you want a cheap Gibson to bash around with, then get a faded......

I'll put it this way. I like my guitars to feel like wood. Tung oil neck, tung oil body. The faded SG's and V's feel like wood. Too damn bad they forgot to strip the bark off of it.

I would like to play one of those, i am curious as to how they play, I have seen the finishes on those and the Fender Highway 1 Strats I can only say they look like I like Tongue Oil finishes, but those finishes are really Jack.

I've decided against getting this guitar. I'll either one day by a real one or get GMW to make a custom one.

slayer: The finish feels unfinished. I'm going to play another eventually just to make sure the one I played at Mars isn't alone because the finish was utter and total crap. You know what paint feels like when it doesn't dry properly, and there was too much moisture in the air when it was painted? It gets that sticky/wet feeling on it. That's what the finish felt like. The fretwork was horrible. I wish I could say that $600 for a US made Gibson isn't a bad deal... but I've played too many guitars in the same price range that have signifigantly better fretwork. I guess if you take into account the fact that it IS still a Gibson (it still SOUNDS like one, that's for damn sure) and add the cost of a fretjob into the purchase, it isn't so bad... but you still have to deal with that finish. I haven't had the chance to play a faded yet, but the boys at the LPF rave about them and these guys are sticklers that mainly play historics, repros and real vintage pieces. If you are curious I would suggest trying one yourself or going over there. This board tends to be a tad biased when the headstock doesn't say Jackson. The guys over there have no reason to give them the thumbs up. Most of them have the real deal many times over and still bought them. Infact, many bought multiple fadeds because they liked them so much. By the way, I don't think $500 is a good price. GC was blowing them out for less a while ago.

I don't know about the faded SG or the Flying V....but I'd love to see a faded cherry Firebird!

BigDaddyD: Despite the fact that I own four Jacksons and would decapitate all those that would blaspheme their name in my presence, I'm unbiased. I apply the same standards to every guitar I pick up. Are the frets done properly or am I going to slice my hand on them? Is the finish smooth and blemish free? Is the neck shaped well? Is the control layout good? Things like that. I don't check the setup because we all know what being on a hanger in GC can do to a guitar.

The faded V simply isn't that great of a guitar, AS IS. Find one whose finish isn't sticky then get it a fretjob and you're looking at a pretty good deal. If you're not wanting to spring for repairs to a brand-new guitar, there are much better choices. In the ~$600 range you have various Jacksons, Epiphones, ESP's and even.... well okay, not Ibanez. The faded V's could be good guitars, but you shouldn't be saying "could be" when you're buying a NEW instrument.

Dammit, all this talk is really making me want to play one again.

Yeah, really. The faded V I played had fret ends I wouldn't let pass on a friggin' DX1.

BM,

I wasn't directing that at you. You are clearly entitled to your opinion. I am simply saying that a large group of incredibly picky members of the LPF that play $3,000-$5,000 (not couting their vintage guitars) axes all bought and love the faded series. Many members bought more than one model. They are a great value for the price and are great quality. The only real thing that isn't top notch is the finish and that is the whole point of the series...they can offer it at a low price because of the finish. I am simply recommending that he try it himself. There will always be bad guitars in batch runs, but as a whole they are supposed to be quite good.

Yeah, the faded V is definitely one that needs to be checked out before purchase.
