You're not paying for a nice chunk of tone-generating maple, you're paying for pretty, pretty quilty shapes on your guitar. A full quilt top on a guitar would probably put it up into graphic-finish price ranges or more. The more expensive models, SLAT's and JazzR's and customs if you want, all have maple tops but I'm not sure how thick (not a veneer, in any case).

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I can't understand why anyone would want a thick slab of maple on top of their Soloist or Rhoads, anyway. Regular neckthru Jacksons are bright enough as it is without adding even more maple into the mix. I would think a veneer is all you would want. The SLAT's and JazzRs and such are mahogany guitars, where the maple tops add a bit of bite and top end, just like on a Les Paul.

Anyway, quilts and flames are for the sissies...real men go for the pile o' skulls graphics!!

Back in the day (late 70's early 80's) Dean Zalinsky was making his guitars in his Chicago facility. (not exactly sure where that was but it was here in Chicago.). Anyway They where very popular and were being played by people like Sammy Hagar and Nancy Wilson and those are just two that come to my alcohal buzzed brain at the moment. They are great guitars and worth the money if you can find one. I have a couple of Japanese made Deans and they are not leaving my posession as well as the USA Dean Z I have. Killer guitars all the way areound. The Koreans are stepping up to the plate and giving the Japanese a run for their money. The Koreans are at the level now ( if not beyond it) that the Japanese were at in the 80's when Fender started up manufacturing there and those Japanses gutars surpassed the US stuff in quality and craftmanship of the Fender US line.
I would have more Deans if I could find the right ones. Yeah ZZ top played them but they also helped their popularity and uniquness. I say Uniquness because Gibson couldn't do what Dean was doing for the price and the quality. Gibson has had quality issues since Orvil sold the company in 64. Anyway I guess my pint is don't judge them till youtry them. They are nice period.

I set one of these up for a local shop owner that I tech for this week, and they LOOK..AND PLAY like a guitar for THREE TIMES THE MONEY !!!!!

...I was IMPRESSED !!!!!

{BUT...I'd pull those EMG-HZs, and toss in an 89-85 combination IMMEDIATLY !!!!}

...and I'd ALSO GUESS that THESE were made in the SAME PLANT in Korea as the Ravens, Dillions, and MusicYo Kramers...

I was specifically asked about headstock design and that is the only area they didn't follow my suggestion. I came up with a drawing that was a cross between a BC Rich Warlock Widow headstock and the big Dean V headstock. I thought it was kind of cool but Elliott wanted a 6 tuner on one side design. Dean already had a history with the Jacksonesque headstock (see Coors Light guitar from late 80's posted previously).

I am curious about Trillian's comment about them having to change the headstock. Plenty of manufacturers have copied the Jackson headstock over the years. Nothing ever seemed to stop them. Trillian, what more can you tell us?

Greg, that may have been true early on (through roughly somewhere in the mid-to-late 80s or so), but Jackson later got serious about it. I believe after ESP was "made an example of", you see less and less companies copying the Jackson pointy head. Not too many copies now at all, except aftermarket replacement necks.

well, ive been piling over trademarks recently(because i got my hand slapped)...and jackson does have that headstock design trademarked...its up to them to inforce it....remember, everyone had that headstock for awhile, until jackson cleaned them up....that, i think, was mostly grover's doing as he was pretty litigous....

whether jackfenderson does anything is one thing, i know its not a lot fo fun being told to stop something you have big plans for

youd be surprised as to what ISNT trademarked....some big companies havent done much

They may have done the protos that way to see what FMIC would do. Fender sure protects its Strat headstock so you'd think they'd do the same with the pointy
Jackson hs, but who knows? Maybe they'll
license it to Dean a la Floyd Rose.

In any case, a minimal change would get past the trademark issue if worse comes to worst. I'm not really in the market,
but that was true of most of my current herd too! You play it, you love it,
you buy it!

Dean makes quality guitars, and I think the Jackson headstock is what's souring
most JCFers at this moment. Remember you
wanted Charvel Stratheads back for so long though? Let's just see if Dean gets
to make 'em this way; I'd have an open mind, especially with Doc saying he's impressed by 'em!
Ron is the MAN!!!!

Just my opinion but I think the LAST thing FMIC wants to do is make a "tokai" or "Ibanez" out of Dean. Just don't look, they'll go away.
