Re: Schecter Strat Head...

The Strategy models sucked. There was another batch of Stratheads that were similar to San Dimas Charvels. That is what Pete Townshend and Mark Knopfler played. I have two of those. If you can find them, and they pop up on Ebay from time to time, they kick ass. They can also be had cheap.

How do you tell a Strategy model from the other, better version?

And Chuckracer, I'll be PMing you about your triumphant return to the land of the Bees.

        Re: Schecter Strat Head...

Strategy models say Strategy on the headstock. The headstocks are usually the same color as the body. Lots of them are neckthru's. They don't suck by the way. They are not as good as the TX made Schecters from the mid 80's but they are comparable to the import Jackson's for sure. Serial #'s for the "good" Schecters start with a letter, then a space, then usually a 3 digit # stamped on the neckplate. Lots of them have neckplates with a microtilt hole but not a microtilt neck. 1 volume and 1 push pull coil tap tone control is common. Many types of wood was used for the bodies. I had walnut bodies, alder, ash, maple etc..

The Strategy I just picked up certainly doesn't suck. It's actually pretty damn sweet. And the painted Strat headstock looks way cool.

Yeh, it does have the microtilt neck with no adjustment screw. It would be pretty cool if it did have the adjustment because when I took it apart to clean it, the 25yr old shim of course fell out.

This guitar must have been in the case for the last 20 years as the front and the headstock are perfect, but the back and bottom of the body have "case rash" where the fur in the case has rubbed the finish.

Anyway very cool looking guitar, kinda like a Schecter Jake copy, white with the painted white strat head...

            Re: Schecter Strat Head...

I paid under $200.00 for every Strategy I have ever owned. Most of them were in very excellent condition and played and looked great regardless of origin. The neck thru's are extremely similar to the Charvel model 5DX (or is it 5FX??)that I have owned a few of. The last Schecter that I bought was an 86' Yngwie Schecter and I paid $600.00 for it. Before that I bought an Schecter traditional from around 88' and I paid $475.00 for it in mint condition. I sold both of them for more than I paid for them quickly and easily. Please let me know where you are finding USA made Schecter strats for under $200.00 because I would like to buy a dozen or so. I do agree that the USA models are better than the Strategy models but I never said they were ='s. All I am saying is the Strategy is not junk. Out of all the mostly expensive high end guitars that I own my favorite is a cheap Schecter A-7 Diamond series which of course is an import. It also plays/looks and sounds like a monster and can tear any puny 6 string a new a$$hole at anytime. It has a huge solid mohagony body, a gigantic neck, 10-70 gauge strings, dual truss rods and a hideous metallic black finish. I guess since it isn't a USA model it must be junk. I will have to remember that when I play it. Maybe I will paint Strategy on the headstock just for kicks.

              Re: Schecter Strat Head...

Wish I could help you, JGCable, but I'm thinking I got lucky with my sub $200 Schecter. It was the only one. I found it in a local music store when I stopped in looking for a cheap practice amp. I found the amp I was interested in for $125, then went to grab a guitar to try it with. Saw the strat head, looked at the logo, and knew it wasn't one of recent Schecters (which I think are pretty cool, by the way.) Anyway, I tried both, and told the salesguy I liked both. He said he'd give me the amp and guitar for $300 cash, tax included. Needless to say I high tailed it over to the ATM.

Why such a good deal, you ask? Well, the store closed its doors within two weeks of my purchase. Had no idea it was closing. My guess is the kid stuck the $300 in his pocket.

I hear you. Lots of times, if it doesn't say Fender or Gibson on it they assume it is junk. I have "stolen" a few USA Schecters myself. Nice score though for you!!

Save your money JC you are apparently satisfied with the Strategy. besides, I said around the same price. But I will say that I paid $260 shipped for one of mine, and $450 out the door for another that I have been offered $1200 for. That one is kick ass. Keep your eyes open, they are out there. My collecting approach is different than some others I suppose. I don't like to settle for the lesser line. The Strategies will work, but I would rather have the other ones or else move on to another brand.

                    JG,

I just reread your post and I must say, you are way off base. Anyone that knows my posts here will know that I am one who could care less where a guitar is made. To me, place of origin has nothing to do with quality. I own and play ESP, Gibson, FEnder, Schecter (Stratheads), Tom Anderson, BC Rich, Hamer, Taylor at the moment. To me, they are all the same in quality, yet my parts shred Fender if Fender Japan, My ESP is Japan and well the rest are USA. Quality is what matters. If you get a stiffy from your Strategy then props to you. I don't. All I am saying is that in the current market the price difference is negligble (in most cases...not all.) If that is the case, I don't want the Strategy. That said, if I were on a budget and I played a particular one that rocked, I would buy it.

I was only reacting to your bold statement that the Schecter Strategy guitars are junk. That my friend is way off base IMHO. This guy owns a Strategy and I was just giving some info on it because I know quite alot about Schecters considering I have owned them since the early to mid 80's. He obviously digs his Strategy. I agree with him. It is some nice bang for some little bucks. Not everybody can be lucky enough to find a good deal on a USA made Schecter. If he asked if he should buy either a USA TX made Schecter or an import Strategy version my answer would be of course BUY AMERICAN!! The thing is that he didn't ask if he should buy it. He asked if anybody knows anything about it. Your response that it sucks was not helpful. I guess in the future I will have to pay more attention to your posts.

You know what? They do suck. I wouldn't want one. But hey that is me. Especially not when you can have the real deal for usually the same price. The Strategies were imports, and although are not horrible, can not compare to the better made Schecters. Seeing as how the price is generally the same, they suck. If it said ESP you guys would say it sucks regardless of how or where it was made.

You are entitled to your opinion, why aren't I? I think they suck. I didn't tell anyone not to buy it. Guitars are a personal thing. What sucks to one person can be gold to another. He wanted some info and opinions. I have been collecting Schecters for many years now. I have liked them for a long time. I said that I think they suck compared to what else you could spend your money on. I also, said that they are not the worst thing that you could buy, and that it is possible to get a decent one. If the dude is happy..cool. If you like yours...cool. I don't like them. Deal with it.

Sweet Schecter Mr. Graphic! I picked up a strat head Schecter about 14 years ago when I lived in Detroit. Nobody at the shop knew what a Scecter was and it was only $200. It has just about the sweetest neck around. It's one of those few legacy pieces of gear that I own, the ones that will never be sold! I actually sent some photos to Schecter asking about some info. They didn't really tell me much except that it probably sold around the $1300 mark. I like to think that Anderson shaped my neck but who knows.
