Re: Won a Dean ML XT Phantom off of the bay...

Yeah! I saw that house in the reflection. EVILLL! I was combing my brain to try and figure out what the reflection reminded me of. You nailed it dude. Amity Ville Horror! I have had access to a Dean or 2 over the years. My next door neighbor had an actual 79 ML in cherry burst. It had gold hardware and binding galore. It had a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge and the origional neck pickup. He would let me jam on it. As I got older I grew to appreciate it for what it was. He bought it new in 1979 for around $800 he said. About 12 years ago a friend of mine's dad had an old, unknown year V in blue burst and I played it every time I went over. I guess to me, Dean is like a cult classic guitar. The Rocky Horror Picture Show of guitars. Alot of big names used them and some still do. I have played everything from their Player series which is about as bottom of the line as you can get with Dean to the USA models and European made models. I knew a local dealer. Even the crappiest Dean was a pretty good guitar for the cash and the middle of the road Deans like the ML XT and Z's were well worth the price tag. I've always wanted an ML since I saw Iron Maiden and the Cars playing them back in the good old days. After playing a boat load of them over the years I always said I'd get one. I couldn't beat what I payed for my ML. Musicians Friend wants $429 and that's a discount price. I got it for $199. Even if it sucked it would still be worth it IMHO. They said that it was a clearence item. They had an EVO Phantom as well. If you are looking into buying a Dean I'd say go for it. When I get mine I will play it, abuse it and molest it before I post about it. I have gone off half cocked about new gear before and then posted about how much it ended up sucking. We will see, but I will let you know how it plays for sure.

Man, Sarj...THAT is a KICK-ASS PRICE for that !!!!...Be they IMPORTS or USA MADE, IMHO the Deans and the Hamers are A LOTTA GUITAR for the buck !!!!...VERY UNDER-RATED, and STILL kind of like old US Kramers and Japanese Model Series Charvels BEFORE the cat got outta the bag !!!

Hell, 3 years ago, American Kramers and Model Series Charvels {EVEN Model 6's} could be had on E-Bay and in pawn shops for $150.00-$200.00 ALL DAY LONG !!!!!

That's true Doc. I was shocked when I found out I won. I bid 3 times I think and left it at 199 and let it go for about 2 or 3 days as I thought I would be sniped anyway. I checked the seller out. They had a 99.2% positive feedback and they have all the little icons like stars and crap like that. The cool thing was that they let me pay by money order instead of their credit cards only policy.I figure I'll get it as described......Brand New.

I hear ya Jon, I picked up and doodled around with a new Cadillac model a few months ago. I was very impressed with it. I knew it couldn't have been a USA model because they only wanted around $700 for it, I think, I don't remember exactly, so I turned it over to see where it was made, expecting to see Japan or Korea and lo and behold it said Czech Republic on it. That was a totally new one on me! I had never heard of such a thing before! From my brief encounter, I thought it was a very nice guitar but I thought it should have had a "convertible top and a CB too"!

Believe it or not, I've been to Tularosa before. Almogordo, Ruidoso..etc.. I grew up in Northern AZ.

So, since you have this new version of the Village People, is it fun to stay at the Y-W-CA? And, can I join?

Sure you can be a part of my Heterosexual Village people. You have to be a lesbien like me though. So what did you think of my small village Tularosa? I moved here 20 years ago from San Diego CA. I went from a population of over 2 million to around 2000. There were more kids in my Junior High back in San Diego than lived here back then. Now there is around 8000, but that's counting surounding areas.

I've always been into Dean guitars. I plan on getting a 79 series ML with a Floyd. I'm not big into Explorer shapes or V's, but the ML is a good cross between the two and looks cooler than the exp. and v. Playability wise they do their job well enough. I don't have the highest expectations for the ML Phantom, but it will serve it's purpose and I'm sure it's a keeper.

It's good to hear you've been through Tularosa. Now somebody here can relate to where I live.

The Czech Republic stuff it a true custom shop, especially the set-neck guitars. It's the same shop that builds some high dollar custom basses(can't remember their name).

The Korean Dean's are damn good for the money. That Korean shop is basically where Japan was in the early 90's with Charvel as far as quality.
