An EMG-81 is a heavy metal lead pickup(or rythm if you prefer). It runs off a 9v battery. What you get from them is CRUNCH AND PUNCH! Their EQ is pretty flat to my ears, but that can easily be fixed with a EQ pedal in your amps effects loop.
What makes them special? I don't know, you tell me. I personally like them for their punch. Even when your playing fast and on the high frets you get a big fat SMACK in your face when every note is played.
I think EMG's have to much output to be used in a hollowbody. I would not use them in a Es-3335 if I were you (unless you like constant feedback from your amp )
EMG makes floating pickups for Jazz-type archtop guitars, too. Check out the EMG-91. The H or HA models might be a good alternative, too, though they're single coils in humbucking housing.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yes, I believe the HZ pups are the modern version of the Select series. Both are passive, but I think the HZs are made in USA, and the Selects were made in Korea. I had a set of Selects I put in my string-thru Dinky HX in the mid '90s. They are decent sounding, but very bass heavy... I had to crank the treble on my amp. I swapped them out for a real EMG 85/60 set and couldn't be happier.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
So i naow know i have to stay away from those Hz and focus on the 81's right?
am getting a n Ibanez with a EMG 81's at bride postion and am very interesting how it sounds!
I am currently using ES-335!
Magnificent guitar, very diverse and you can play everything with it!Really!
Although i need more narrow sound, heavy wise and not all the other diverity the Gibson can give!
So i am thinking of selling it and getting something that can dig those hard tones almost to the metal!
I am in a hard rock group, with 3 guitars and therefore it is essential that every guitar is in its place, soundwise.
While playing i noticed that i really dig both other guitars with mine!
And that is really not my intension!
Especially when my solely target in a band is grovy and undisputed rythm!
What would you suggest!
Is EMG a way to get there!
What about the guitars?
Anything you recommend?
Being that you are the rhythm guitarist only, EMGs would work very well since you can easily use external EQ (rack or pedal) to squeeze your guitar into one space in the mix. You can't do this easily with Duncan/DiMarzio/passive pickups because they have very different and specific tonal qualities.
As for the guitar you wish to use, it does not matter - get a 2"x4" piece of wood with a guitar neck and bridge and EMG and set your EQ and it will sound the same as a Jackson, ESP, Gibson, or Fender.

I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood
The most human thing we can do is comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
i was thinking of doing just that!
As for the external Eq is concerned it will have to wait because i dont have any more space in my rack setup!
I'll have to buy new one, bigger one as mine current is all filled up!
If you like Rythym like I do, you may like the EMG 85 better. I personally like it better than the EMG 81, which seams a little trebly and brittle to my ears, I think the 85 has more Thunk and Chunk, anybody else notice this? Jack.
