Yeah, it's gloss over koa. I think the light outside brightened it up a little, too. That guitar was actually in one of the catalogs and it looked a little darker there. Maybe Troy will lose his mind and send that one my way!

Re: good 7-string?

I wanted a 7 string to mess around with. At one point I had called to order a Carvin but they were closing and I never called back after that. I then realized I just want one to mess with and I don't want to drop a lot of money for one, although they look nice, and I haven't heard any bad things about them. I want a good 7 string for the price. Like I got my DXMG for a low price and this thing is so awesome. They need to make a DXMG7 or something. I want something with a floyd and good wood. I was looking at the BC Rich platinum Pro warlock 7. I don't like the speedloader on the new NJ seriers, although they have better woods. The woods on the platinum pro I have never even heard of. Not to mention I used to own a warlock bass and that thing nosedived like a turd. I was also looking at the Schecter 007 Elite. I would sacrifice a floyd for better woods if I had to. What other brands have something I could get for more of what I want? Thanks for any help.

I am now starting to look at the Ibanez RG1527. Any opinions? I don't really care for bashing, just facts. Thank you again.

!!!!!!!nobody mentioned the ebmm JP seven string?! Best neck i ever played, amazing sound, great bridge, and a piezo, what more could you ask for in a seven string, or any guitar for that matter?

Indeed, I've never played one, other wise I'd probably mention it. No doubt it probably plays great as most his signature stuff does.. (the 6 is one of my fav's) However, that is probably a recent model.. at the time when I was shopping 7's (1999-2000) I do not believe it even existed.
Personally, the amount I presently play a seven is like 5% of my already limited time invested to playing. If it was more like 50%, then it would justify the cost..but that is just me.

I have an Ibanez RG7420 and I love it. I was planning on selling it but then I installed EMG 707's and decided to keep it. It sounds amazing.

Re: good 7-string?

I see a nice looking Ibanez 2027 with piezo used. But I don't have the money currently. I am sure the EBMM JP models are nice, but I don't have the cash for that. I wan't something to just mess around with. Piezo would be killer to have, but I kinda want something new or that I know is in good condition (i.e. something I can play and "test drive") I don't see the RG7620 or the model mentioned above on Ibanez's website, they must be discontinued. I don't know anything about Ibanez guitars. I am going to a guitar center here in a couple days to see if they have a RG1527 to play. Some reviews I read seem to be ok about it. Made in Japan and what not. I need to play one for myself though.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yes, the RG7620 (Lo-Pro Edge 7 trem) and RG7621 (hardtail) models are discontinued. They've been replaced by the cheaper made RG7420 (Lo-TRS 7) and RG7421.

But I don't see the 7420 or 7421 or whatever on their site either. Just the 1527 and the 7321. The 1527 is a Prestige model or whatever, made in Japan with the trem. The 1527 is the one I am looking at now, still need to find one to play though.

Re: good 7-string?

Even though they're reviled around here, my backup seven is a LTD H-207. I had a DR-7 before that, and the LTD (at least the one I have) is a superior instrument in balance, fit&finish, and playability. (Not that the F&F are especially good on either.) The through neck LTD 7's I've played were of comparable quality, and they og pretty cheap. I'd like to replace it, with a Schecter 007 Elite, though. (I'm a tunamatic-type guy, which rules out Carvin, Ibanez, and lots of others.)

If you can do the flatmount bridges, one of the Schecter "plus" series setnecks is a LOT better than any Ibanez short of the Uni, Prestige line, or K7, IMO. I've found that the set neck or a thru neck helps with B string definition, for some reason. (Of course, it could also be the difference in woods, as the K7 sounds pretty good. Then again, it is the long scale, too.)

As usual, YMMV. Word of warning, though - I bought a seven figuring I'd use it about half the time. It's all I play - of course, mine is a CS Soloist 7, but most people I know split at least 50/50, and some never go back. I'd say I play my six strings about once a week now. That B is addictive...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">IMHO, the H-207 and H-307's are 2 of the BEST Import (Other than the higher end Ibanez's) 7's out there in looks AND playability. Why they discontinued those models is beyond me.

A agree about the 7 string addiction also. I'm 100% seven's now. I don't even OWN a 6. They feel to brittle to me now and I can do EVERYTHING I did on a 6 with my 7 so why bother?

Re: good 7-string?

Here's a list of the ones I've tried out alot or owned,

1. Ibanez RG7420-21
2. Schector Omen 7
3. Squire (Fender) Strat 7

Due to the effects that a wider neck have on my wrist I can't play them for very long. The Fender Squire Strat 7 suprized me alot. It had a 2 point trem, 1 humbucker and 2 single coils. Unplugged it had alot of volume and clarity. Even the B string was clear. Fit and finish were pretty damn good for a Squire. I plugged it in and found that the stock pickups were excellent. I almost bought one, but my wrist said "No". I owned the Ibanez RG7421 with the Floyd (I think it's the 7421) and I had it for about 6 months. I loved it, but like I said I had some wrist problems (carpel tunnel Syndrome). I got to play a Schecter Omen 7 and that one impressed me as well. Another I have noticed is that hot pickups tend to make 7 string guitars sound muddy. I had PAF's in my Ibanez and they were enough. I have heard of some people putting SD Invaders and Distortions in. I guess it would also depend on your amp too. My 2X12 combo couldn't handle it. I wouldn't play anything tuned down to B through a CRATE combo amp. The cab can't handle it and you get a bunch of vibration. Another tip is to find a 7 string with a longer scale if you intend on going lower than B. 25.5 neck don't do any justice when you get down into C tunings. Kinda muddy. I would say a bolt on 7 string is a little brighter as well. It all depends on what you are using it for and how you want to use it. I was playing Korn, Linkin Park and a few origionals. It worked okay for me just using the RG7421. If I would have added a 4X12 cab to my combo it would have been better. That's just my experience.

I'll agree w/the lower power pickup thing - the guitars I've heard with Duncan Distortions in them sound REAL muddy. I use a JB, but it's set considerably lower than the JBs on my six strings, and it's nice and clear with a good punch.

ESP now makes their 27" scale Carpenter model 7, which I'd be interested in hearing, if I could find one. The Ibanez K7 sounds pretty good, and it's the long scale, too.

I can't afford another CS guitar, though, and I really, really wish Jackson would just make a Soloist 7. Of course, I can wish all I'd like...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I liked the one (very used) Carvin that I played quite a bit. I'd go so far as to say they're on a par with (or superior to) every other production seven string out there, including the USA Riches and the Petrucci. (Which I've played, and is nice.)

However, I will say this: The three Jackson CS seven's I've played have been, hands down, three of the best sounding and playing instruments I've ever been exposed to. Then again, for what they cost, they should be.

My Soloist 7 definately makes me echo the "cold, dead fingers" comment. However, the Carvin I played was quite the excellent guitar - I just wish they did tunamatics. (Maybe with a Floyd, it'll be high enough?

Oh, and I still play my sixes because, for whatever reason, they sound better recorded in Drop-D than the seven string. That's the only reason, though.
