Re: Are IBANEZ RG\'s any good?

I started life as a Charvel fan, my Model 4's were my babies... then I got my 750XL, which will still be buried with me...
Then I was educated into the school of Ibanez;
I've had probably a good 50+ Ibanezes in the last couple years, I've still got about 2 dozen of them, you just have to know what models are good and which should be avoided.
For those of you that are Floyd Rose fans, the Edge trems are a really kick ass trem.
Try to find the older models, such as the RG550/560/570/750/760/770 -- Those are the good ones.
Anything less than the RG5xx series and you're getting the cheapo trem that just doesn't compare to the Edges.
What Ibanez did for this years models is discontinue the RG5xx models SORT OF.
They still make them all, but they gave them new numbers and made them part of the "Prestige" line, which is supposedly the higher end models.
As for model number changes, they just added a 1 in front of the old number...; so, an RG550 is now an RG1550, an RG570 is now an RG1570 and so on.
The trems are a little different this year and I'm still not totally sold on them, but they are killer. I'd have to say I'm still partial to the older trems.
I don't have a preference over the older Japanese or the Korean AANJ models, both are totally killer; to the hardcore Ibanez guys, they always prefer the older Japanese models over the newer Korean models - but in my opinion, both are equally killer.

I guess if a twig neck is your thing then nothing compares to a wizard.

I think the best Ibeenhad ever built is the RG770DX.

I LOVE those colored inlays and matching HS.

Re: Are IBANEZ RG\'s any good?

I own an Ibanez RG620X. (Like a 520, but with a Piezo installed)

I can easily say it's a GREAT guitar. I worry about the prospect of having to service the double edge trem.

I had to sell off a JAckson Sl2H for financial reasons, and this has been a great replacement.

However, im not through with Jackson, Im just waiting until I can afford a Custom shop unit! The Ibanez is a keeper though

SOME RG's are good, but many are not. They're basically like the 200,000,000,000 different versions of the Gibson Les Paul; you have to go through a lot of them to find one you're really happy with.

I personally like the "sharktooth" inlays, and wish more had them, especially the neck-thru ones, which they also don't ahve many models of.

Re: Are IBANEZ RG\'s any good?

Until some douchebag stole it, I had a beautiful RG470 in the copper color. That was one of the very nicest guitars I've ever owned. Helped that I got it for way under store price. I actually had bought a DX10 and the neck was crooked. The store didn't have any to replace it with so they offered me the RG straight up as they couldn't move it due to the color. I loved it. It was well over $100 more than the Jackson. Right place right time.

A recent pawn shop score.. an older MIJ RG560 in creme...110.00. Just needed a setup. Other than a few dings, it's a solid guitar for silly cheap.

Re: Are IBANEZ RG\'s any good?

so to go short: ibanez aren't that bad, actually they are good (especially considered what one pays for them):

- the trems are good (the edge, lo pro edge, double edge and the edge pro)
- the basswood isn't that bad actually
- the necks play well, especially the all accec joint is good
- the stock PU's suck, unless there are dimarzio's installed

and yes, i have an ibanez as well: and JPM100P4, different from an other RG due to the Viper neck, which is the neck from the old RT series. actually bought the guitar mainly for the neck.

I once thought about buying an RG550. I still do every once in a while. BUT, then i get slapped right back into reality when i play my Charvels.

Personally, I'll take an edge trem over a JT6 everytime..and I like the JT6 on my models most days..but overall..the edge is a better trem IMO.

Re: Are IBANEZ RG\'s any good?

I'd love to get my hands on an RG770 in blue or red. Right now I have a few Ibanez, 2 RG550's, an RG550/520 hybrid (rosewood fingerboard, 2 hums with pickguard), a UV777BK Universe and an RG7620. I used to have the original green Universe with maple fingerboard since '93 and I never played it that much, I just wanted a 7 to screw around with. I wasn't an Ibanez fan or anything, knew almost nothing about them. THen i played a used RG550 in a store a few years back and they just sort of dawned on me.

Re: Are IBANEZ RG\'s any good?

Hello, I don`t know much about Ibanez guitars very much, except I played one at one time with the Wizard neck, and I thought it was too thin, and it was a bolt-on, and I don`t care for bolt-on necks. OK, my question is: did Ibanez ever make a thicker neck, neck-thru or set-neck shredder, and did they ever make one with just 1 humbucker in the bridge? Also, did they ever make a Shredder with the 24.75 Scale neck? I am a nut for 24,75 scale Shredders, with set or neck thru necks, jumbo frets, and preferably just one humbucker and a thicker rounded neck with the 1 11/16 nut width Jack.

Re: Are IBANEZ RG\'s any good?

They now have the RGT models which are neck through, and the neck is thicker than the Wizard neck. I just don't know how thick as I have not yet played it. I don't recall any single humbucker guitars in their line-up, at least not for the 2003 catalog year. The Artist guitars might have a 24.75" scale, but they are a double cut Les Paul style and probably wouldn't be set up for shredding. With those specs you would probably have to steer clear of Ibanez.

Ya man, it is kinda hard to find 24.75 scale shredders, but there are some out there, just none in current production from any company at this time that I know of? Thanks-Jack.
