• Look what I got for $199

So, I walk into Guitar Center today, and they had marked down this used guitar to $199. It's a LAG Rockline Standard--a French handmade guitar that is basically like a tripped-out Ibanez JEM. This thing is solid--mahogany body, Duncan Custom Custom bridge p/u, Schaller Floyd... I'm rather happy with it, though I might change out the bridge p/u to a Duncan Distortion. I'm not sure why they had trouble selling it--it blows away most of the stuff in their store. The neck reminds me a lot of the Jackson '88 Ltd Edition...even has the scalloped frets from 18-24. Perhaps it was the "Made in France" thing...

Anyway, here's a (very poor) pic I took:

Where's the monkey grip?

Cool guitar!

Here's a link to some better images from LAG's web site. They really do make some beautiful guitars, even if they do speak a "furrin" language...

No monkey grip, Word, but it does have a purple lizard-skin graphic finish--try finding a JEM like *that*!

The finish does not come out at all in that photo on my crappy little digital pen camera.

Ah, if I had had the money...

I played that guitar on Friday - it plays pretty nice - and they REDUCED the PRICE after that? (It was $299 when I picked it up, still a steal.) The only shop that sells Lag around here sells that guitar for around a grand, new. You stole it, straight out, and it's a nice piece - if it had seven strings on it, I'd have found a way to buy it. In fact, they have several nice pieces in there right now, including a late '80s Zion Radicaster in a frosted marble finish that just rocks. Steve (ex-Veneman's manager) runs that one, and he keeps it well-stocked.

Mike, I was agonizing over that guitar for quite awhile, too. They had marked it down to $200 during the "swap meet sale" last month, but it went back up to $325 after the sale. When I saw it for $199, I took it as a sign from God that I must have this guitar!

I swapped out the Duncan Custom Custom for a Duncan Distortion I had laying around. The CC has a nice round, singing tone, but it's not nearly 'heavy metal' enough for a purple lizard-skin guitar! It's a screaming monster now with the Distortion in it.

I'll try to post a better photo soon, but I have to find the time to take a few outdoor shots, where my camera (no flash) works better.

I don't know what's goin' on at GC's around the country, but everyone should run -not walk! - to their nearest GC and steal a used axe. I've read a couple other postings where people around the country are walking out with ridiculous deals on used guitars, including one guy who picked up an Ernie Ball Music Man Axis Super Sport in mint condition for $400!!

Killer score - they are really well made. I agree with Michael - I want one of their 7 strings.
We have a dealer local to me as well (Branford, CT), and he has told me that they have been out of production for a little while - something about financial trouble at the company, and the employees may try a buyout so they can continue the line???
So - if that doesn't happen - you have something that will no longer be produced - even better score!

I hope they can stay in business. They make a fine guitar.

Wayne, why would you need another seven string, with that Soloist you have?

Seriously, Lag makes some good stuff - sorry to hear they have issues. Their semi-star shaped guitar is really cool - especially in the camo finish. Very Jackson-y vibe.
