• Anyone ever shaved a neck?

I just got done shaving the neck on my Aria Pro II. (yeah, I know, I have a thing for cheap guitars) Anyway, I got it real cheap on E-bay, and it's in mint condition, but the neck was log-like. Since I got the guitar so cheap, I decided to see if I could slim it down a little. Using my Fusion neck as a reference, I used a palm sander with 250 grit and worked very slowly, checking it every couple of minutes. It turned out great! It feels exactly like my Fusion now.

I want to do that to an Ibanez RG7620 I just bought used. It has a thick coat of poly or something. I'm thinking if I just get that off it might feel better.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Just take some steel wool to it and put tung oil on it. My RG7620 feels like there's almost no finish on it at all, just like a thin matte satin like my Dinky necks. I think he guy that had it before me sanded the finish off. Then again, I've only played one other Ibanez in my life and don't remember what kind of finishes their necks are supposed to have.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No mine is high gloss. I can't really tell if it's a thick coat or not though. You don't mean #0000 steel wool do you? That's would take forever. I was thinking of taking 80 grit sandpaper to it.

Re: Anyone ever shaved a neck?

When I got mine down to the thickness I wanted, I sprayed two very thin coats of satin lacquer on it, and then used the steel wool to dull it down. It worked great.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">my god man, NOOOO!!!!! put the 80 grit DOWN!!!! you're not going to be taking a lot of finish off, you're just scuffing the surface so it feels satin-y.

use 600 (or finer) grit paper, sand it til it's satin-y, but be careful, if it's a painted neck (not well steeped in ibanez knowledge other than icemen) you're probably gonna go through the paint, and you'll have light spots. if it's not painted, ignore that.

anyway, use the 600 grit until you've got the entire area done, then yes, use steel wool to buff it a little. you do NOT need to use any kind of oil whatsoever because you haven't taken all of the poly off, savvy?

PM me for more info if you need it, i've done this more than a few times on cleared necks.

so essentially youve taken off the sticky poly coat, and the paint will feel a little smoother, yet still reatin some ability to protect the delicate wood?

Sounds interesting, as I HATE painted necks, but I love neckthru guitars. Tis rare to find a good tung oiled/unfinished neck-thru!

yep! you basically just scuff the top layer of poly, and you'll get that feel. however, i've seen pix of some soloists that chuck removed the neck finish on, and it looked great.

Re: Anyone ever shaved a neck?

I did once on an early-1980's Ibanez that had a tree trunk for a neck. Sanded it down with a relatively heavy grit, then medium, then fine grit.

Steel wool shreds away in your hands, and you have to use a lot of it while wearing a mask to not breathe in the metal flying off from it. .0000 grade sand paper is very fine and won't leave any scratches on your neck or metal in your lungs, while still getting the job done.

Chuck did a Les Paul for me......... Fantastic job, and he started with 80 grit
