  • Gibson Voodoo SG

Anyone know anything about these? I like SG's, and this one has an ebony board and only costs like $900. My only concern is that it sounds almost TOO cheap, like it is lacking in something.

Voodoos are cool, newer SGS besides standards have always been cheap, plus the red grain filler looks really cool.

I think they're cool, always loved the SG shape, but it's made of swamp ash and will definitely sound brighter than mahogany, and will be lighter weight. Swamp ash does sound great, though, if you're not looking for a true SG sound.

i dont think its swamp ash its regular ash which IMO does not sound as good & its heavier. IMO if an SG doesnt have the original smaller heal & 60's body shape its not worth having.

Hmm, Musicians Friend says it's swamp ash. I thought I read the specs on Gibson's website said it was also swamp ash.

I want an SG to sound like an SG. That's what makes them so kick ass.

Hey Ace check out the Faded SG Special...it's a pretty nice guitar from what I could tell, and its around $600. The neck on it is really rad, almost perfect to my hands.

None of those voodoos sound like their regular mahogany counterparts be it the SG, V, EXP, or LP. They don't sound bad, but ash is brighter and a whole different tonal animal. I agree that the faded series is the best bang-for-the-buck Gibson. They sound traditional and look great too (the brown SG looks better, and more vintage styled than the faded red). I threw a set of Duncans in my brown faded SG and it turned it into a new guitar in both sound and looks. Also, they come with dots now instead of the stupid moons. Try them first though as they can have pretty spotty fretwork.
