The notes sound full for a few resons. One is that guy in the videos absolutely rocks on that thing. Two is that the pickups, what look like EMG SA's, are really nice active pickups. They run about $60-70 on eBay. I have no idea what sort of strings the Stick uses, but I am sure you can find out on their site. As for how many strings you can play at once, since you have ten fingers, I assume you can play all ten strings at once. Building on of these is most likely going to be harder than it looks. The action has to be super low and uniform not only across the different gauge strings, plus across the entire length of the fretboard. Plus you would have to buy their bridge, and unless you had their specs, or someone who knew them well, yours would probably come out very differently. I think the price tag of $1600 is fair considering what you are getting. I also agree that it is a considerable sum of money to spend on ANYTHING.

The 'frets' are also huge! They are not even frets, they are metal rods inserted into the fretboard. There is no radius to the board, its perfectly flat and the action is super low. A fairly light tough sounds out a full note. The thing that I couldn't believe is how Steve could follow the guitar lines with slap bass and he did it without a midi controller! He did have a stick there with midi where he would follow guitar lines with piano or organ sounds. It was very cool!

I guess the wait for a stick is very long. He said even as a rep for the company he has to wait 8 months to a year for a stick. He told me the best thing to do is contact Chapman Stick and tell them you are looking for a used Stick. They get them in trades for new ones and the whole thing is refurbished and resold for a bit less than a new one. Get one of those and if you like it, order a new one.

When I saw Dream Theater about a year ago, John Myung used the stick on the song "New Millenium". That thing just sounds amazing! At a couple parts of the song John plucked the bass string like a normal guitar/bass, which made a very cool growl sound.
